I use "Mothers" mag wheel polish. I use a "Mothers" power ball, attached to an electric drill and I use all kinds of pressure. It "will not" scratch or etch the porcelain. Takes off rust marks and rubber marks, and will generally make the porcelain shine like it never has! Great stuff!!

Bar Keepers Friend - same stuff you use on your porcelain sink.

The sign that the bar keepers rubbed through the finish, is probably not porcelain.

I have used acid to get cement off porcelain and did not hurt the finish.

I agree, sounds like baked enamel or basecoat-clearcoat.

Thanks

This is from the Barkeepersfriend Website; https://www.barkeepersfriend.com

FAQ:

Can I use Bar Keepers Friend to clean glass?

Absolutely.  The key is to use as small an amount of BKF as the project allows and rinse thoroughly.  The micro-abrasive particles may temporarily leave a white film if not rinsed completely.  The abrasive used in BKF will not scratch glass or porcelain when properly used.

What color was the sign that you used the BKF on? I avoid using it on older blue porcelain.

Kevin has shown us amazing before and after results using Mothers, I'll have to check out the Mothers "Ball" that he mentions to see the results. Brady

I frequently use my auto paint buffing supplies to buff porcelain signs too. If you have a paint buffer it helps bring some shine. I could see how the meguiars ball would work, same idea.

I usually buff after I've cleaned as much as possible using barkeepers friend or whatever else. I like to use very fine (ultra?) sanding pads you get at auto paint stores to clean up strong staining, I find it's a good balance between removing stain but not removing much gloss.
