I sold an item that shipped outside the U.S.A.I did not offer ins.and the buyer did not request it,shipped first class.Arrived smashed, buyer sent several pictures to verify but so large could not make heads or tails of the pictures.I told the buyer i could not file a claim,no ins.He replied "what can we do about this?" Total less than $50.00 involved including shipping. the question--WHAT WOULD YOU DO?? This is not a pass or fail question, merely interested in the way different folks would handle this.Replies welcome,i will tell you what i did at the end of this discussion. No"well you should have insured it" That is hind sight!
wink

I would give the money back and charge everybody for insurance from now on been there before. If they don't want to pay insurance then they can't afford to buy it.

You (or He) could file a claim with the carrier. In the end.... it is what it is.

You live and learn. Insure everything. Return his money and write it off. I insure and track everything and email the tracking number when the parcel is shipped. Dave

I would split the cost down the middle. Chris

I follow the same approach that Catauladave does and include the cost of insurance in the purchase price. Fortunately I have never had to use insurance but I do pack everything with the belief that it is going to be treated like a football.
In this case I would refund the money, take more precaution with packing, and chalk the episode up to a learning experience for myself.

I agree with not shipping out of the USA.
Was this an eBay transaction?
In general,Why are you asking the buyer if he wants insurance?
The seller should be the one paying for the insurance, never the buyer.

I would give a full refund, and take this as lessons learned.

I'm going to guess the buyer assumed it would be shipped insured.
If I ship first class I tell the buyer it's not insured and quote the insurance. It's usually cheaper to go priority mail.
Items under $30 , I take the risk without insurance if it helps the sale.
I would mention the 50/50 split first , but if the guy is reasonable and thought he was getting it insured , I'd refund his money. Maybe request he return the broken item depending on what it was.

I have had 3 experiences along this line, to draw from. One was an item I had sold that was not broken, but never arrived(back before tracking). It was my job to get it to the buyer in the same condition that he purchased it and that did not happen so I refunded.
Another time was an instance when I purchased an item from DB and it arrived broken. He told me the same thing and I have always believed it to be correct. He said it was his job to get the item to me as purchased and he had failed this time. He asked for me to please send it back and he would send another.
Third time was an expensive globe that I had sold and did not insure. One lens was broken in transit and the body damaged. I filed a claim with the USPS but only received $50 that all priority packages are automatically insured for. The buyer wanted to keep the remaining lens, so we settled on a value for the remains--deducted it from the original price and moved on! He has since bought other items from me and become a pretty good friend.
Moral is--treat others as you would want to be treated and things will generally be just fine.

when I ship it includes insurance & track as a seller I guarantee my product to arrive in the condition it was bought - now here's an experience I had with a glass cylinder several hundred dollars from east to west coast I paid for the item & insurance it came fedex obviously broke (rattling) left on door step as i wasn't home - tried to make claim FEDEX said seller had to as he purchased the insurance at that end - so claim was settled seller got paid for claim made money twice nothing was ever sent to me no more communication. All I got was lesson learned this was early day of EBAY when using money orders Ebay said recourse leave negative feedback as FEDEX paid claim it's up to seller to be honest haha

When I sell items (like Hardy's Garage) I pack them with the assumption they will be roughly handled along the way. I double box plastic salt and pepper shakers! To answer your question: I would refund the money and change your shipping policy to require insurance on everything you consider could be damaged in transit. Also, I would see if there is anything you can do to improve your packing methods (double boxing, foam rubber for packing in addition to peanuts and bubble wrap, making sure the packed items are in large enough boxes and not touching the box sides where they can be easily bumped, and anything else you can think of).

Regards, Jim

I collect gas pump salt and pepper shakers
and the plastic coin banks made by AVSCO.

crazy Kevin must have shipped by Pony Express, he says before Tracking available. I agree with Chris, buyer didn't request Ins. and I didn't put it on to protect myself, so split it. If Buyer not happy with that?...eat it all and be the better man for it. Insurance is ALWAYS cheap in comparison to the potential outcome, as this story proves. smile Ed.
