Nice sign. But is that definitely porcelain?

Thanks for looking. This sign is absolutely not tin! It is a very heavy steel. I have other porcelain signs and this certainly looks the same. I polished a small area on one corner with 3m C polish and nothing came off on the white rag. There are definite ridges along the edges of all the letters and borders.

I have the same sign in the smaller (42") but double-sided version. Its also marked by the AM sign company (dated 1946), which to my knowledge primarily produced tin (painted metal) signs. Like yours, the metal is heavy gauge and the lettering stands out like shelving. I think its pretty common to say "tin" for any metal, non-porcelain sign.
I've also used polish on some of my painted metal signs with no obvious loss of color. A more rigorous test would be paint remover but I wouldn't take that chance on such a nice sign, unless I was 100% sure it was porcelain.
Still a nice sign and probably doesn't affect the value either way.

Good description! Our local expert is stopping by tomorrow to take a look. He asked what the back looked like. he says the back would be a grayish from the "firing" if porcelain.
Think I'll hold off on the paint stripper!
Thanks!

I also had the smaller 42" version and mine was definitely SST (single sided tin). And like Jecos said, "tin" does not mean thin cheap metal. It is just the terminology in the sign world for a painted metal sign, as opposed to a porcelain one.
My thoughts judging from having that similar sign and based on the scratches in your photos, it looks like SST, to me.
Here are some common acronyms for signs:
SSP: Single Sided Porcelain DSP: Double Sided Porcelain SST: Single Sided Tin (painted metal) DST: Double Sided Tin (painted metal) DSPF: Double Sided Porcelain Flange DSTF: Double Sided Tin Flange PPP: Porcelain Pump Plate SSM: Single Sided Masonite

Just trying to help here. Not trying to sound like a know it all- cuz Im not, although Im sure I sometimes come across that way... Its a nice painted enamel on embossed steel sign. Allen Morrison never made porcelain signs.

Thanks for all the info! If not porcelain I sure would like to know what type of paint this is! If a sign is “embossed “ would it not have impressions visible from the back? This one is smooth on the back!

Its not embossed. Like I said, I have the smaller but double-sided version of this sign. The paint layering on both sides is pretty pronounced for a painted metal sign.
