I am new to this pump restoration thing. As the title says, I have a G&B 176 (I’m pretty sure anyway). It belonged to my father first and was a pretty nice survivor, until it was involved in a fire.
I am now “restoring” it. I am about done body working everything and then while mocking the thing up one last time before I paint it, I realized that the pump is actually the wrong pump and therefore put the pump handle in the wrong place. They cut a jagged hole for the pump.
I’m guessing somewhere along the way the original pump failed and was replaced with what was available. The current pump is a heavy round pump with “AA 2632” cast into it.
So the question is, should I get rid of this pump and use the original pump handle placement or stick with what was there? If I move it to it’s original location, how do I go about mounting a handle without the pump? Thanks for any help.

My suggestion is that you provide more pictures (and try to learn how to post them up and down), because the guys here can recognize what the pump is just by looking at the top of the pump. Show some pictures of what is inside also.

I would cut the return pipe off, then replumb the pump so it fits the correct hole. Richard

So I took gatorgaspumps advice and tried to move the wrong pump to the original pump location and I think I discovered why they put it where they did. The pump is too large to fit in the original location. So knowing that, how are you guys that have removed the internals, attaching the pump handle?

On any visible that we restore, we leave the pump mech. in place which keeps the unit balanced. If you take it out the unit becomes quite top heavy and prone to falling over. I remove the internals on 40s-50s electrics only. Paul www,severngaspumps.com

I would prefer to leave a pump in it, but as the pics show, it’s the wrong pump. Can anyone suggest a place to find a correct pump?

Did you look at the For Sale With Prices section? GasPumpFrank has a G&B 176 pump for sale. The header for the listing is "Visible Pump Pump".

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I did see that one for sale on here, but I don’t think that is the correct pump. I think I need one similar to this one...

Why not use what you have? Patch the burned out hole to make it presentable and fill the original location, block, prime, paint? After it is done, no-one will know it is not correct except you? Just some common sense to a problem that could cause un-needed stress? Paul www.severngaspumps.com
