I’m new to the site, and looking for some info. I have a few signs, and finally have a place to put them up. i have a 48” tall by 48” wide Shell gas sign, double sided porcelain. It has holes to mount 2 brackets from the top and one from the side. I would appreciate any info anyone can give me about the sign, like timeframe these were made, and what kind of pole it was displayed on, or let me know where to do some research of my own.

Looks like shell letters are stickers or something got a rust circle under the last L but not in the red ? And second L is curling at top! Kinda weird to me. Just my 2 cents

Yes, looks like someone maybe put red tape over the letters at some point, now it’s pulling off

Looks like the small, red diagonal curved lines at the bottom are very different between the two...

There are many styles of Shell signs over the years. I believe this sign to be earlier than Randy`s but not 20s. Randy`s has a little bit of red boarder , then after that the whole bottom had red boarder, then the whole sign had red boarder. After that they went to the sharks tooth design.

Nice Shell sign!
I would agree with Matt. I've noticed a couple variations on the sharks tooth design and thought that the version that was different than the one I had, was a fake but after asking on here, I was informed about them. There is also the possibility that there were a couple different porcelain sign companies producing signs for Shell so there would be differences.
I also agree with you about the red tape and you could leave it just the way it is or you can heat gun off the tape to see how badly damaged the porcelain is underneath.

The tape on the sign puzzles me...I have never seen it before. Would the tape be from the sign manufacturer or probably applied later? Was the application to cover a flaw? What do you think?

I don’t know about the tape. It was put on with skill...it’s the exact width of the letters, and perfectly straight.

I already know a lot more about the sign than I did. Anyone have examples of how these were hung? I’d assume the 48” sign was hung as the sign for a station with lights on it. Since it’s double sided I’m trying to figure how to hang showing both sides.

Edit: probably hang inside my shop. Now that I know what to search for I realize this has enough value to make it worth a thieves time to get down from a pole.

That’s an extremely wise decision. Unfortunately, thieves will steal anything. Different times we live in.
