Any recommendations on what eats crud but won't hurt original paint?

simple green .. ... I tried that Randy. Not bad, but it was pulling some paint onto the rag I was rubbing with.

I've cleaned greasy crud out using hot water and dawn dish soap in a bucket little by little using a soft brush and sponge (with the scotch-brite type backing) but be careful with the sponge part if you want to keep original paint. Just wanted something to cut the grease and dirt well and takes some work but slowly does the job.

I have been using oven cleaner for years. Spray on ,let set for a few minutes and spray off with a good nozzle. If really tough you might need a brass brush before washing off.
Anything oil and gas.

If that has the original paint, then I would imagine the years of crud is more durable than the paint. Whatever works to remove the crud will probably remove paint too. I'd take it outside and start with gasoline first.

Steve, I have used WD-40 as mentioned. I have also used mineral spirits or GoJo hand cleaner. I have found each of these works well without hurting the paint.
