Looking at my visible pump I have put a gate valve on it (just because I like it) and my hose has a normal trigger nozzle (well I like that also)
And I was thinking. For the pumps that have a gate valve and a banana nozzel....
Was that a 2 man operation just to put gas in for someone?
Because unless you pulled up to almost touching the pump. One person can't reach the nozzel as it's in the fuel neck. And reach the gate valve at same time
Did they just guiess at when it was going to be full/over flow?
Run back n forth between car and pump?
Or have someone else work the gate valve?

Wouldnt he just put the nozzle in the tank and turn on/off the valve? I've always imagined one lone guy, at the side of street smoking a cigarette, doing this all by himself. Maybe occasionally dancing the Charleston when a "doll" came along. But that's just me...

Well guy pulls up and wants say 3 gallons. The tanks were very small
You can not see just how much gas is in it just as today to know how much you could put in
Running gas all over the car...someone gonna be mad
With a banana nozzle. There is no auto shut off like we have today
And as stated before. Unless you pulled the car up close enuff to hold nozzle and still touch the gate valve. It needed
To be a 2 person job
I suspect that's why the banana nozzle was short lived

I've restored a few of these pumps but never have tried dispensing. I could see where you would just watch the cylinder drop in level or just pump in the three gallons into the cyclinder and dispense with just one guy. But I'm not sure what they did. I bet they figured out a way to do it with just one person, I think it would be hard to man with two guys all the time. But I dont know. I'm sure they were good about not over dispensing, as that would cost them $.

Well the 3 gallon would just be on the thought of what the driver thought the gas tank would take
And of course. I was using 3 gallon for reference
What if the customer said fill it up?
Really no way to know when it was full until it started pouring on the ground
Then the service guy would have to hurry and hit the valve.but. the hose would still have gas in it
That would bleed out
