This is one I would like to find out how to do with my Bennett.

Any body ever done this? I have the lights and the motor still runs but I'm not sure how to hook up everything. Help would be great!
Thanx,
mike

Mike,
If you search under "advanced" in the search box here on oldgas you will see it has been discussed a few times.
You don't use the motor i know... you use a motor from grainger i think. Tom Buckles just did one where you sqeeze the nozzle the meter turns and the bell dings.

Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

Mike - The poster of that video(wurly1100) posted on this site 3/05/06 on how he hooked up a small drive motor to turn the Veeder-Root. He used a parallel shaft synchronous AC gearmotor to turn the computer. He used a motor from Grainger. The motor he used was 60 rpm with 2.6 inch pounds of torque. I know because I used the very same motor on a M/S 80 I motorized.
The only problem is I think 60 rpm is a little fast. jkyocom (Joe) (the veeder root guru) has said that 40rpm is about the right speed for motor to turn.
I had problems after a couple years with the 60rpm motor slipping...so I replaced it with a 30rpm motor from Grainger and I like the 30 rpm much better. They didn't offer a 40rpm in this type of motor. The motor number is as follows
Grainger item # 6A178
Hurst Manufacturing
Price = $79.80

The motor is pricey...but it does run EXTREMELY quiet.
If you do a search on wurly1100 it should pull up the original post.

One other thing, some computers have gear trains on the bottom and I believe Bennetts that do have the gear train, turn twice as fast as most other computers.Joe might be able to shed a little more light on the gear train subject. If you have seen some of Joes' handywork, you will have to agree this guy knows his stuff!

Good Luck

Kurt

I found these geared motors in a surplus tool store. Very quiet & not expensive.

I have 2 of 10rpm & 1 60rpm left.

A computer for a Bennett has a gear train on the bottom that reduces the input by 1/2.
Normally w/out the gear train, the computer needs 4rev per gallon, a Bennett meter turns at 8 revs per gallon

30 to 40 rpm is ok without the gear train
the 60 rpm would be about right with the gear train ON
that would reduce it to 30rpm
If you are going to motorize it , I would suggest you disengage the totalizer, by removing the two small gears on the diagonal shafts.
That is the first thing that may lock up on your computer and shred your motor gears.

Joe, Dick!!!

This is not a subject to discuss at 12:00 in the morning. Threw too many darts, drank too many beers to even know what either of you are talking about.

Actually I think this is a great subject. Since a number of our members want their VR numbers to spin, their sight glass spinners to spin, I think, between all of you, you can come up with a great solution for both.

This all looks well and good but is it possible to use my original motor? It is very quiet and runs like a swiss watch. Im sure there would have to be some way to convert the pully drive to a smaller D shape drive and a lot of reducing down.........
Well I may just stick with my lights.
Thanx guys,
HAGD, mike

Your pump motor turns @ 1725 rpm & is totally enclosed [safe run time is 30min], no ventilation.
No will say it can't be done, but it's going to be a nightmare of pulleys.

OR, make a fully enclosed system to pump fluid.

Try BUILDING a clock at that hour!!!!
I just had finished a computer for a 36 Tok.
Then up this morning for a full day of plumbing,
Back to the clocks tonight....after computer delivery.
Sometimes I feel like the James Brown of gas pumps.
TIME TO MAKE THE DOUGHNUTS!!!!! I already made the doughnuts...LOL
