Hello, New to the Site and just acquired an Atlantic globe w/ 16 1/2" lens but failed to realize it's a 7" base and I need a 6" base... Anyone have a 16 1/2" metal body in above-average to excellent original condition...? I may buy outright or perhaps a trade can occur... Thanks, Jim www.soda-machines.com

Jim, have you considered just changing out your 6" base for a 7" base and keeping your original globe?

I'm not a globe expert but I thought all 16-1/2" metal bands had 7" bases,,I know in Canada Imperial Oil Ltd. used them a lot..

Thanks for the prompt replies!
The problem I have is this globe going on an original Wayne 866 with the original holder, which is 6"
I was told that 16 1/2" bodies were available in either 6" or 7"...
I was also told there is some form of globe base adapter, but I'm not sure one would exist for fitting a 7" base into a 6" holder...
Thanks again for any input... Jim

Jim, you can take a 7" base and trim it down to 6" without compromising the globe. Standard oil and all their subsidiaries used 16-1/2" globes with 7" bases, thats why we have so many in Canada, ESSO was everywhere. I have a spare 16-1/2" body if you don't find one closer, you can email me at pogogas@telus.net

Jim--Use the adapter that minuteman has! It would be a shame to cut the globe body down. The adapters that he is talking about, are fairly common and look fine when used with a 7 inch globe.I have a couple in my globe display and unless someone points them out, you don't even realize that they're there! Good Luck!--KEVIN

I'm currently using both of mine. I wonder if Seth has any more? He just sold one on ebay and I just missed bidding on it!

Jim, Welcome.
Go ahead and ruin the looks of your 866 with that ugly adapter only if thats what you want. Buy a 6" base body. If funds are short trade or cut your existing body. Hopefully someone has already offered to trade you...
Say what you want but those adapters only look "ok" on visibles, maybe.

...Jim...be patient - a 16 1/2" diameter, 6" base metal body will show up soon enough...no need to cut down a good original body...check with Scott @ gasglobes.com if you can't wait - he or Lonnie Hop ought to be able to scare one up for you...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

I had NO intentions of cutting down the base! Some things are getting harder and harder to find, and although not rare, there's no point in me adding to the delima by ruining a perfectly good globe body... I'm patient, something will turn up... I've been waiting for some time for these Atlantic lens that I just purchased a few weeks ago. Now look, there's a nice pair of Atlantic Ethyl lens w/ a blue star burst ! ! !
Thanks for everyones input! Jim

Do what I did. break the spots welds or what ever is holding the base to the to the band, and pull apart. Then order a 6 in. base from one of the suppliers of globe bodies, insert in the band spot weld or mig. paint and then you you still have the orignal band
