...in the regions of the country that produce maple syrup, many 5 qt. oil cans were converted to 'sap catchers' - basically one lid was cut out, the can was cleaned of oil, and a small hole was punched near the cut out rim to hang on the nail in the tree below the spout, to catch the maple sap...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

True about the maple sap cans, I found a bunch of them years ago here in N. Wis. I don't display any of them b/cuz they are not that great, not bad either. What do you do with stuff that isn't the best but too good to throw away? Put them down in the barn for posterity?

Can't afford the mint condition cans and prefer the patina.

I buy cans at sales for parts, like grease lids, or lids for 5 gallon, etc. But otherwise i use them for nails, or stuff in the barn if they are tough.

its neat when you see cans lying around, just were just opened and then never used, but kept. You do see a fair bit, but most got thrown away.

i see like old cans unused, but sometimes opened with a can opener, and just set aside. Not sure why they got kept, maybe just cause it could be a container someday. A guy locally was keeping pop cans for the scrap yard, but they were from the 70's and all bottom opened, so they went for good money at the auction sale he had. SO, there are various reason why this tins got kept.
