This picture is of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner NewsPaper in down town L.A. I worked there for 21 years and I’m trying to date when the picture was taking.

Look at the small Richfield gas station. can you guys identify those pumps what years they were used… just click the link. For the picture..
Thanks for the help...

Here is Bill's photo, just a little easier to see;

Not sure of the time period, but a great look back into history!

Can't tell for sure on the pumps but they look like Wayne 60 narrows and they were first produced in 1935 and went unti 1946.
Theres something on the tops of the pumps that make me think I might be wrong on the type but I can't get it clear enough when I enlarge the picture.
Car years might help more--any car guys that can help???

I'm not up on the different pumps, so take what I say with "a grain of salt". Using the Ctrl key the the + symbol to make the photo larger. The items on top of the pumps look to me, to be advertising toppers(?) or placards.

I would say 1935 to 1937, by the cars that i see and the pumps.

The picture looks to have been shot about 1935 at the latest. Meanwhile I'll go on a limb and say the pumps could be Tokiem 870's , there again mabye not . Ed Shaver

Pumps are Wayne 60s like already said. I can't tell, but if they're narrow bodies, that would put it right at 1934-1936...only made narrows for a year and a half or so.

Since cars weren't replaced every 2-5 years back then. Let's be a little more generous with our time period. Mid 30's up to 1942. I say 1942 because I don't see any signs regarding rationing.

Watch a video of Highway Patrol on Hulu and one sees cars from the late 30s through the early 50s in the highway background shots traveling the byways of Northern and Southern CA.

That Examiner building is still standing downtown. I drive by it almost daily. Those tiled domes and it's architecture are very distinctive. Station is gone.

I read that the decal on the pumps was used from 39-60. If thats true then the photo is 39 or later.

Pre war IMO. Even the Red Car Line is still in operation. None of the cars seem to be any newer than mid 30s.
