I recently picked this up. It is similar to a sign that was determined to be fake by a few members. The reasoning behind the other fake was the font and size. Mine has obvious differences in size and font from the "fake", however it is the same style of sign which makes me suspicious... This is 21" x 16, it has two mounting holes on the bottom. Too big to be a lubester sign, but what would it's application have been. There is no broken flange. Thoughts???

These should not have any mounting holes on the bottom. They were "lubester" signs that had a bracket built into the bottom. Just by looking at the rust on the back I would say it is a fake. I have only seen double sided lubester Socony Signs also. Can you get your money back?

No. I believe they were like 12" by 8 or 9" but I will double check. They are pretty small when you see them in person.

Thats my point, I dont think it was a lubester sign... I know those were smaller and double sided. This one has me scratching my head. I not in it for much money, so I'll just keep it anyway. I would just like to find out if it's real and what it would have been used for.

To me it looks real, but I could be wrong.

Member "Pegasus" / Richard might pop in and say what he knows or PM him and ask him to stop in here for a look-see.

I know the point here is to see if the sign you have was ever made. I am a newer collector- but I would say this is a fake(never made) sign. Just for an example look at the difference between your sign and the real lubester sign. I think it must be cheaper for the people in India to make a single sided sign. I have never seen this SOCONY sign before.

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Any single-sided sign would have been mounted against something, so the back side could not be viewed. The most common examples were pump plates.....all single-sided and mounted on gas pumps. This sign makes no sense really....why would you make a sign with just 2 mounting holes at the bottom.....it would need holes at the top at a minimum. Especially on a sign this size. It could have been mounted on the side of a lubster, but the lack of mounting holes just makes the whole sign "illogical". A fake so sure!!
