I picked this up at Iola about a week ago. Was this used for underground tanks? I thought Tokheim moved out of Cedar Rapids about 100 years ago. This piece dosn't look that old.

JJ Tokheim did sell his Tokheim Pump Company & it moved to Ft Wayne & was renamed Tokheim Pump & Tank Co. But a member of the Tokheim family did start another Tokheim Company in Cedar Rapids & continued into 1958 [per The BOOK]
Your float was made by the later company for use in Above Ground tanks. Under ground tanks are measured with a Dip Stick, just like they are today.

or a table lamp. A Flexible tape was attached to float & ran over the top edge of tank and back down the outside where markings were.

Under ground tanks can be measured with a Dip Stick--many stations also use a computer to moniter tanks, not only shows the gallons in the tank but tells how much water is present, temperature and detects leaks. I ALWAYS relied on the trusty DIP STICK.

Was there really that many above ground tanks? I have seen tons of these floats over the years, but never really had enough interest in them to buy one or learn more about them.

These floats were used in all types of liquid storage tanks, not just gas/oil. As oil is pumped out it is stored in tanks before being transferred by pipeline/trucks to another tank. After being refined it is stored in tanks, all above ground. Until the age of computers, most measuring was done w/ floats.

What to do with it? It looks like a beautiful piece of glass. Shine up the brass and you have an objet d'art. From Webster's "an object of artistic worth or curiosity, esp. a small object."
