i know there is alot of debate here over whether to restore porcelain signs or not but this isn't that kind of thread. i wanted to see if there would be any interest in following along in the step by step process while i redo my 1955 phillips 66 sign that was severely damaged in the fire. i tried cleaning it, but no cleanser would touch what was baked on at approx 1200 degrees :0

if there is any interest, i'll keep posting progress shots with explanations of how & why.

Restore! It will be a symbol of recovery when finished. And I'd love to see the process.

o.k., we'll proceed! in the case of porcelain, which is fired on or baked to give it gloss & durability, it has to be "etched" just like a car needs to be sanded for new paint to stick. usually, in the case of signs, hydraflouric acid is the best thing to use. the acid eats off the top "glaze" layer & makes the coating dull & porous.i know everyone has seen old signs where this has happened naturally with time in the elements. this is a special case though, so a more extreme method was needed to remove the melted "who knows what" that was all over the sign.when i restore barber chairs or other single color porcelain pieces, i lightly dust them with the sandblaster for the same etching effect. thats what i did here to remove the crud, clean the rust from numerous bullet marks, but also being careful not to completely lose the top black layer on the sign.

after light blasting:

looking better already! the next step is to make a stencil of the lettering & graphics. usually, in a normal situation, this is the FIRST step. sometimes, on a two sided sign it takes both sides to get this correct. bullet damaged letters etc. on one side may need to be copied from the other to be precise. after looking at a similar sign for sale currently on this site, i need to adjust my pattern slightly on the bottoms of the "I"'s "L"'s & tail of the "H" to get them correct.

making pattern:

more to follow....

Come on with the rest of the photos! The suspense is killing me!! Also, what all do you restore? Do you have a shop and do this for a living or just restore your own stuff?

patience grasshoppers!! smile i'm in the process of filling the bullet marks now. will get more pics up this evening...

to answer another question, i do custom metal fabrication, bodywork & custom paint. if anyone is familiar with the old harley davidson "hummers" built from the late 40's to the mid 60's i paint more of those per year than anyone else in the country. also do cars, gas & oil stuff, barber chairs & coke/soda stuff. just about anything old...

harley hummer:

one of the early glascock coke coolers (yes, i hand lettered all 4 sides...):

barber chair in my collection:

the mrs. says i have too many hobbies, but i also from time to time will scratch build WWII high altitude flight jackets using new sheepskin & original leather parts & hardware when salvageable. the sheepskin gets brittle/rotten after 60+ years, so isn't wearable.

before:

after:

so, to come full circle, i do just about everything that rick does on the t.v. shows. i just wish i could get people to pay the prices here that he gets out there !!
