A recent Topic about signs at an auction made me think this was the right time for this post. I would like to get everyone's opinion/method on how they tell if a sign has been clear coated. If a sign has chips, sometimes you can see the shiny spots on the rust. This is not always the case. I have seen some signs taped off around the rust spots and the only give away was the excessive dirt in the finish of the sign. Would like to hear others thoughts.
Thanks

I KNOW SOME OF THE HEAVILY ACID RAIN STAINED PORC COKE BUTTONS THAT I CLEAR COATED BACK IN THE 80'S HAVE YELLOWED A BIT. EVEN ON SOME OF MY HOMEMADE SIGNS WHERE I CLEAR COATED, THEY TURNED OFF-WHITE AND MAKES ME WISH I HADN'T.
I'd look at any sign carefully and if you are suspicious, I'd ask the seller if you can in person if it was clear coated.

IF your at an auction or a show, look Closely around the rivets/holes. Ask seller/auctioneer IF you can give it a pin/tip of knife test. IF it leaves a mark, it has been Clear Coated. MOST of the time JUST asking if you can test it will bring out the Truth.

I think the easiest way to tell is if rust holes are shiny.
A clear-coated sign will have an unusual shine to any damaged areas of porcelain...

Edited cause I saw that's what the original poster indicated too...

Take a fine piece of sandpaper, 600 grit or finer, and sand the colored area in an inconspicuous area. If the sanding dust is white, it is clearcoated. If it sands the original color, it is not clearcoated.
