Pictured below is a one piece Shell globe I purchased a few days ago. I know it's an original, I know the history and players involved with this piece. My question, the "SHELL" lettering on both sides is crappy, it has been poorly touched up by someone in the past. I am thinking that I can brush on some paint remover, clean the globe up nicely and have a sign painter redo the lettering. The glass has the Shell borders cast in it to assure of proper size and location. I will do some research to provide the correct red coloring to the sign painter. Is this the proper route to take? Will this hurt the value of this globe? Any other tips to pass on to me?  THANKS for your help!! Neal

Mint condition with original paint the globe is worth about 500-600 tops. So doing a proper repaint won't effect the value that much. I can say this with authority, paint stripper will NOT get all the original paint off, only where the touch-up is. The original paint is fired on and it will take some work to get it off. I tackled that job once and it ain't no fun!!!!!!!!!

Roger is correct, IT AIN'T NO FUN removing fired-on paint ! I tried it once. 2nd time I masked off the rest of globe & used a beadblaster with LOW pressure to get rid of the old paint.
To get the paint on evenly, I lit up the globe then spray painted it[too lite = PINK, too dark = BLACK when lighted].

I wet sanded the paint off mine with 150 grit emery cloth. It will come off. So does your skin, after the blisters break.
I had vinyl letters cut to fit mine, looks as good as paint but may not have the value. I'm not sellin so it don't matter.

I wonder if you could use the process used by the guy that restores Standard crowns. You might want to experiment with it. A few coats of brush-on latex rubber coating that will peel off. Then you can cut out the letters with a razor, spray paint the globe with a paint gun, and then peel off the rubber mask...?
Might be worth trying it out on a ceiling fan globe or something first...
