I know that this has been discussed many times before, but I'm having a hard time finding the answer through the search function.

I have a large porcelain sign that has been painting with house paint, which is now flaking off. The paint preserved the sign very well. I'd like to remove the protective paint layer, but don't want to ruin the porcelain underneath.

What is the best product or method recommended?

Thanks.

Chemical paint stripper won't effect the porcelain. You should always test it on the back. Or, scrape the paint off with a body man's one edge razor blade use water as a lubricant so you don't scratch the porcelain finish. Finish off with fine steel or brass wool.

I have had excellant luck with the Orange Citrus stripper that I get at Lowes. Smells good and really does the job. I paint it on, cover with cellophane and let the product do its job. They even make a rinse to go with it. I have tried all the other aircraft strippers etc in the past with varied results. Jim

Plain old paint stripper will whip that old paint off in a jiffy and will not harm the porcelain in any way. Simply hose off and wipe down.
I'd apply a good metal wax or polish after, to help preserve the finish & shine.

I use Orange Citrus also, worked well for me. It's a gel though, maybe the ones you can hose off are easier.
