Just got off the phone with a fellow collector that was concerned about the oilzum thermometer that I use as my avatar. He was the second person to tell me that there was a negative buzz at last months CTO auction about the authenticity of this thermometer. The fact that this thermometer was made of aluminum vs tin scared off potential bidders. I own an aluminum oilzum thermometer and have had a few others in my hands. I am 99% sure these thermometers are old original advertising pieces from the 1950's.
I own 6 thermometers that share the same dimensions. The only one that is tin is the creamery thermometer. The rest are aluminum. I have also owned the popular Penn fishing reel thermometer that shares the dimension......also aluminum. Not sure why this manufacturer offered there products in aluminum, but they did. As you can see from the pictures, I highly doubt these are repops. No one could expect to sell some of these as repops with the subject matter on them.
No one repopping signs would use aluminum. Aluminum is harder to form. It has a tendacy to crack when stretched and shrinked. It is harder to paint. Aluminum has to be etched for paint to adhere. It is more expensive to purchase than steel, why would anyone use aluminum to repop signs??
Who ever paid the $575 for the oilzum therm at CTO auction got a great deal!!

I agree, it repro'ing they would use steel. As stated, aluminum is very hard to stamp and form.
Thanks, Phil _________________________________________________ Looking for any old pumps, or nice 5 gallon cans.

The OILZUM Thermo is KILLER! Thank you for your posts.
Ever see a Manufacturers name on an OILZUM?
The Morton Salt Thermo is New manufacture, correct?
Would love to see the Penn Reels Thermo too... Has anyone ever kicked off a Favorite Thermometers thread on "Showcase" forum? Thanks again, Craig

When I grew up my home phone was #7, and my work phone was #4. Just shows how old I am.
