I picked up a new pump this week. A Tokheim 39 LRA dated 7-49. It started life as a shell employee, with multiple image updates, and several layers of yellow and ended up working for Total. I was power washing it, and to my surprise most of the Total White washed off and gave way to Shell Yellow and Shell Red. As I sprayed the side, the white washed off and revealed a round decal that said "With TCP". I've never seen this decal before. I was wondering was it a Shell decal, or a Total decal, and what is TCP?

I believe Shell used TCP in the 60s, but it could have been the late 50s.... Shell was advertising TCP/2 by 1970....

I've had this cardboard spinner for a few years now... Would have been in a stand on top of a pump and would have spun in the wind...

Reads SUPER on one side... TCP on the other......

Be patience while everything loads - they are towards the bottom of the page.

Shell Oil commercially introduced tricresyl phosphate as a gasoline additive in 1953. I was buying a pair of Canadian Shell salt and pepper shakers awhile back and the dealer said they were from the 1940s. I did some research and told him that since they advertised TCP on the pump they had to be at least from 1953 or later. Cheers, Don.

Mike - If you can find a copy of the book "Service Stations Vol. 1 - American Gas Stations, 1922 - 1964" by Mark L. Elmore, it has a bunch of picures of shell stations with different signs and banners advertising TCP. Most are dated early to mid 50's.
