How should I go about cleaning this sign? I washed it and cleaned it with a mild polish. It has these rust spots on the back of the sign. What do I do now? I have read on here steel wool, Fitz polish, etc. I am not sure if it is porcelain or painted.

I would say its porcelain im 90% sure. Get a better picture of the chipping on the green side and i can confirm that. If it is porcelain you can use myriatic acid use one part acid to 10 parts water rag it on leave it on 5 min and hose it off. Do all of this outside and dont breath the acid fumes. It will scar your lungs.

Hunt long and hard the good stuff still out there.

Just curious, but why go to the trouble of cleaning the back?. Comet cleanser and a scotch brite pad work well but can scratch. Only use acid in the shade. I learned that the hard way.

Naval Jelly applied with a small brush. Let it sit and it will dissolve the rust and not hurt the porclain. Wash off with water. Regards.

The rust is in the back, but I don't want it to continue to rust and rot through the front.

Cleaned a sign with acid in what I thought was shade. Phone rang, I stepped away for a minute, sun popped out and the blue porcelain faded big time.

Your sign is a porcelain pump face from a newer pump, I would guess from the 1960's or early 1970's with out looking in Jacks book. The hole in it is where the computer face would show through. I would hit it with a coat of wax and hang it up and not worry about the rust spot on the back but that is just me. There are also red versions and ones with the hole one the other side too.

I would use the mildest cleaner first and see how it works. Go with acid only if other methods fail to bring it up to your standards.

Keep it away from moisture & it won't get any worse.

Apply clear nail polish on the rust spots.
