I no longer have this sign but it still bugs me that I never found anything out about it. It was a double sided sign that was a pretty thick gauge metal. Does anyone have any info to enlighten me?

I collected Pure for about twenty years and I never ran into that one yet. I can tell you that Pure had a tall can (maybe 2 gallons) that was red and black that was "Puritan" oil. It was older maybe from the forties? Sorry I couldn't help you more, but I would think this sign is somewhat scarce, thanks for sharing. Good Luck, Goober

Thanx Goober for sharing what you know! It's really frustrating to not be able to find anything on it. I wish I had been a member here b4 I sold it. I was thinking it was older than the 40's but who knows. Better chances that someone here will know!

I have a Puritan Oil can, similiar to that sign. I am pretty sure it is from the '20s or '30s. It is an older square/rectangular, 1 gallon can. I will try to post pictures.

Thanks, Darin. I had a smaller 1/2 gal. Puritan can, just like it. I sold it at a swap meet years ago, and have regretted it ever since.

just because it says pure pennsylvania doesn't mean its associated with the Pure oil company Kyle, the Puritan can has " Pure Oil Co." by the bottom of the can, in the first photo. Gary

Yes, Gary, that is a super cool can with the keystone cop! Thanx for sharing!! The bottom of the sign said "The Pure Oil Co" on both sides and I find it cool that your can says Minneapolis, St. Paul. I probably would not have sold it if the sign had the Keystone cop with the big hand on it. He is too cool.

Thanks M-C-S, there was a Puritan tin sign with the keystone cop, but I haven't seen one for a long time. I had one and sold it, because it had "tractor oil" instead of motor oil. It was like this sign.(not mine). Gary

I do know from my research that the Pure Oil Company of Minneapolis was independent from the larger Pure Oil company of Ohio that we all know. The Pure Oil Company of Minneapolis (MN) merged with them in or around 1920. So anything with the Pure Oil company and Minneapolis is from that date or earlier.

Gary, That is a sweet sign! So, from the pics and what Alan said above, that dates the can in the pics above, to pre1920 and then the black sign must be from right after the merger and then the sign I had must be post 1920 and probably sometime shortly after the black sign, or did Pure of Ohio have a Puritan line also??? Probably not espically since the graphics of the words and the "swosh" below the Puritan are the same as the can that is probably pre 1920. THANX SO MUCH FOR THE INFO GUYS! This is fun dective work.

...the flat sign in the beginning of this thread looks like the one in this link, with the flange cut off: http://www.ebay.com/itm/130821606947
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...
