I just picked up an AO Smith pump, has been painted with a brush and is now a standard oil pump. The paint is flaking and showing a yellow base color with red trim around door. The green tag on the inside shows it was last certified in Ill. Does anyone know were to get parts for an AO smith model L-1?
Thanks bill

Just finished an L-1 Smithway, "buckle"latch, done as Texaco Fire Chief, looks great. Not very popular as far as "50's" style pumps go not because they're ugly but because it's hard to get parts for them..no repro stuff out there. Had to make all the metal parts around the glass, etc. Would not suggest doing one unless it was quite complete to begin with.

Bill, If you like the looks of the pump ... than restore it to what you like. If you need parts post it here on oldgas. That is what this site is for, to find parts, sell parts, swap parts, get info. on something and post pictures of your stuff when finished. Don't worry what others think of the pump ... in 5 or 10 years the guys that are passing these pumps up so might find them self buying them for there collections. Have fun ... that's what this hobby is about and post us a picture when you are done.

Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

Gasman,
The L-1, might not be a popular pump in Central Calif. BUT I have not had a problem selling them in Southern Calif. $350-450.

I have an AO for parts also. No doors or pump faces left, but perhaps something is here you can use.

All guys with L1 face shrouds missing. I have an extra large bottom piece (the curved one that goes in the bottom of the rubber) and the flat top piece (goes in the top of rubber) and one glass rubber that could be cleaned and softened up with armorall.

Want to trade for the two side pieces that go in each side of the rubber or buy outright

thanks

OK, i think i have worked out a solution to the a/o smith missing face frame problem. There are basically 4 pieces per side that shroud the door glass to the face when the door is shut. The top piece is merely a flat piece that goes in the rubber channel in back of the glass. The two side pieces and bottom piece have double 1/8" breaks in them so that they fit in the rubber channel and the glass fits on top of the metal channel U. Assuming you at least have window rubbers, Ive found you can make the shrouds easily with a 5/16" 90 degree L bend that will slide between the glass and the back of the rubber channel and hold them in. Or... you can use Erie size ad glass 12 5/8"X5" for the bottom piece and clear glass the rest of the way up. Place a little silicone or glass glue between the two pieces and slide them both in the rubber. At any rate, if interest in making these pieces, drop me an email and i will give you some dimensions of the pieces I made work. I can also give you dimensions to make you own faces out of another brand face.
Unlike Dwaine, I think these pumps are pretty stylish.
