Everthing is owned by the corparation now as most stations here are fast food markets. BP Station changed their hoses out and nozzles during a face lift and had the old ones on pallet out back. I asked about them and it sounded like it would take act of congress to buy them.

I agree that it happens in every collectible hobby. I have had 3 younger guys ask me if I knew where they could get "old" pumps. Turns out that they really want pumps from the 70's. I have to admit that I do like some, especially the ones that look futuristic. George Jetson-like with lots of stainless.

Just finished the book last night. Wow. Excellent read. I actually read parts of it twice they were so good.

Good history lessons through out the book and some very funny stories as well. Caught myself laughing out loud at times.

Thanks again for the insight to this book.

I highly recommend it.

I just finished it for the third time, the first two times by paperbook (the book is somewhere out in the garage, but I couldn't find it so I put it on my Nook).

Loved the story until he got to the "Pines" in New Jersey (will get back to that soon). I grew up in Philly, three blocks from the waterfront. If you looked to the left out my row home all you saw was "Cramp's Shipyeard. The history channel will tell you great stories aboutthe Kiser Shipyeard out on the Pacific coast who was producting a Liberty Ship per day during the war. What they aren't telling you is that the same thing was happening three blocks from my house.
My father was working on Subs during WWII in the Philidelphia Navel Shipyeard, after I got out of the Army after Korea I too entered the Philadelphia Naval Shapyard where I help build the Dolgen, the first ship ever built in the shop, and assembled in the drydock, rather than the other way around. This is now the way they build all ships. I also help build the Kitty Hawk, one of the largest cariers still aflot.

Now back to the "Pines." Living in Philly, having family living in New Jersey was common. My aunt, my mothers youngest sister was a little different. As a kid, to me she just didn't seem the same. All I remeber is that she married (never had any children) an Italian man. Have know idea how long the marrage lasted, but the one thing that sticks in my mind is that my aunt decided that the log cabin that they in needed a basement, and she dug it , all by herself. Why all this, I wish Least Heat had come accross my aunt, he could have written a few pages about her determination.

I enjoyed the part about "The Pines" and Greenwich as I used to live in Southern Jersey for a bit. I also liked the lady on the island off Maryland. He had some interesting experiences in the deep south as well. Good stuff.

I like the modern stuff, but the problem is that it's just so cheap and disposable now a days. Also the oil companies are so protective of their images that getting a hold of the stuff is super hard. I once asked the manager of a shell station if I could have one of their old Shell flags they didn't hang up anymore. She said no, because they have serial numbers, and she has to turn in every single one when they are done with them.
