I have an original filpruf lubester with the lockable fill unit still intact. I need to see an original tool/key that was used to unlock the drum fill. I have it apart and understand how it works, I would like to purchase or reproduce a correct style tool/key. Any pictures or info would be great help. Thanks

There is no manufacturer info on the unit anywhere. The locking unit is about 6.5 inches across, made of some kind of white metal and marked property of a socony vacume company. The lock is rotational, controled by 4 spring loaded pins. The gargoyle AF logo is still visible on the barrel. It also has the correct spout for the filpruf gargoyle diamond bottles. Thanks Steve

I thought somebody who really knows bottles would answer your question for you, but since no one has answered I am going to stick my neck out with my opinion.
It appears to me what you have is the special filler that was used to fill the diamond shape Mobil bottles. Since the top for these bottles was not removable it required a special filler to fill the bottle down the spout. The reason for this was to prevent the bottles from being filled with oil other than Mobil.
I am not familiar with the lower part of the unit and who made it. I have information on hundreds of oil dispensers, but this one is new to me.
Now I hope that someone who really knows about these will correct my mistakes and add to the information.

Hi Jack, Your absolutely correct about the diamond bottles,The lower portion has the same theory, the design was intended to prevent the unit from being filled with anything other than mobil oil. It's my suspicion only the distributer/delivery guy would have had the tool to unlock this thing and not the store owner.

Mick:
I doubt you will find any glass bottles without the tops.
As mentioned, the tops were not removable - so if you've got some loose tops, they came from a broken bottles.
It's my understanding that the tops were 'pushed' onto the bottles. There appears to be a captivated 'snap ring' inside the top that would expand to go over a corresponding bump on the bottle and then seat into a groove in the glass. Once installed, the top did not come off.
That is why you have the special unit on the lubester/oil pump. You inserted the tip of the spout into the top of the bottle - and there was a 'tounge' that opened a plug in the top of the bottle spout. This allowed you to fill the bottle for use again - but only from an approved Mobil oil source.
Later . . .
Jim

Fil-Pruf lubsters DID have a special nozzle. It too had tumblers that needed to be set to the same code as your lubster OR you wouldn't get any oil. Here's part of the patent drawings. When I started collecting back in 1971 the retired Mobil man in my home town showed me one. Back then I thought it was cool but what would I ever want THAT thing for... Hope this helps to explain the filling of these bottles. & here is a bottle without the spout Only way to get spout off is to DESTROY the spout [this bottle had a Badly corroded spout].

I am a "new" guy - don't know if I am doing this right but will give it a try. Jack Sim suggested that this might be the place to obtain some additional information on filpruf lubesters. Have read the posts from 2008 - I have one smaller lubester w/filpruf bottle attachment and an add on lid attachment that needs a locking key to open the device so that oil can be poured into the tank. When searching for the contraption to open the lid I purchased a pile of lubesters - three of them being the large lubesters with the integral locking lids and two keys to open them. The keys are damaged from use and abuse but work fine for the intended purpose. The keys have four brass pins with four possible positions for each pin - therefore a total of 256 possible lock combinations. All three lubesters have the same combination as well as the first lubester purchased many miles away. Must have been the same distributor?
My questions - Rarity and value??? Thanx - Dud
