Anybody know the significance of these markings.im trying to help my dad do some research on a few items he has,these are on a pistol.thanks

They look like proof marks for a Walther P38 or something. World War II era maybe? I'm guessing that these are on the slide above the trigger. Just a guess.

The marks are 88, nazi eagle, and 88. I think proof marks stamped during inspection by the German army during World War II.

More info for you.
The 88 is the German WW-II Heerswaffenamt inspectors mark for the Spreewerk P-38. The eagle is the German army inspector mark. Google it up and you'll find all the info you need.

Someone either found a few sets of these stamps or had them made (can't remember) a few years back and that was all it took. Lots of WW2 era European pistols and rifles like the FN Model 1910/22 Browning started showing up for sale with these marks and the story about how they were made under Nazi occupation of the FN factory in Belgium. Fakes seem to be everywhere there's money to be made nowadays. As long as your Dad didn't buy the pistol in the past 5 years or so he should be good to go. Ken
