I recently came across two plastic station signs one Mobil (6’ x 4’ Just the word spelled out no horse) and one Phillips 66 ( 7’x7’ red, white and black.) Are these collectable?

COLLECTABLE IN THE CURRENT MARKET? I'M ON THE FENCE ABOUT THAT. WHILE I DO BUY THEM I EXPECT TO PAY ALOT LESS FOR ONE AND YOUR DOLLAR WILL CERTAINLY GO FURTHER AND GETTING A GOOD INVENTORY. I PAID $10ea FOR 2 6' SQ TEXACO SIGNS, $40 FOR A 5'X7' CURRENT LOGO SUNOCO. KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE PLASTIC (OR LEXAN) SIGN HAVE BEEN IN USE SINCE THE 1960'S. EARLIER EMBOSSED SHELL, SINCLAIR, TEXACO (6-SIDED), AND SUNOCO DIE-CUTS WILL COMMAND LARGER PRICES, SO IT'S ALL RELATIVE
TO THE COLLECTIABLE COMMUNITY. "76" SIGNS, SUNOCO, AND ANY OTHER GAS BRANDS USED IN THE NASCAR CIRCUIT ARE COLLECTIBLE FOR THAT REASON, ETC. YOUR MOBIL IN GOOD SHAPE IS WORTH PROBABLY ABOUT $100, AND THE 66 IN GOOD COND. $75-$125....WHICH IS MUCH LESS THAN THEY ORIGINALLY COST I'M SURE.
JUST MY 2 CENTS...

Thanks for the info. That helps. I hate to tell the person they are junk since I have a feeling there are more (better) treasures hidden inside. From talking to the person the family has been in the gas station business for quite some time so I am hoping they may want to part with other items.

Yes the signs are real. They were taken down from old stations not open anymore.

Greg, I ran into two of the Mobil signs at the CTO show in Columbus for $40/each. I left the show and forgot to buy one of them ! I did buy a SOHIO and a 70's style Texaco for around $100 each. I tried to buy a SHELL with the letters spelled out on the clam - but I was too late. They were sold already. I also ran into several Phillips 66 plastic at a shop in Winchester Va for $75 - I bought one of them. I have several plastic signs - the Esso signs command a pretty good price too. You can still find plastic as "give-a-ways" at many gas stations that are updating to newer logo's. I look for the signs that still have the metal trim ring attached - it really dresses them up when you display them. Brady

I have already purchased four handy oilers and a couple quarts. He also had some ice scrapers and key rings that he just threw in the box as I was leaving…. My thoughts exactly “get my foot in the door” and when they do a big clean up they are sure to find some more stuff.

As Doc said its up in the air. they may be collectable to the right person. And those signs maybe someday who knows? I wouldnt by them for my collection as they are way to big for me to store. However I would buy them to keep them from going to the landfill
