Saw this hood scoop - air cleaner setup at the local car show on a 440 Super Commando Plymouth. Owner wasn't there to ask.
Looks like a vacuum operated damper on the hood underside. The hood exterior had a square panel in the center that was level with the hood.
I'm wondering if that panel opened during acceleration. Anybody familiar with how this setup worked?

Yep, pretty sure it's vacuum operated.

It's known as the Air Grabber hood. When you open up all 4 barrels,(floor it),low manifold vacuum releases the smaller door inside the outside panel to reveal this..

Thanks guys!
I never noticed that feature before. I assumed the panel opened up on the hood somehow. The picture is worth a thousand words. Cool looking. The switch makes sense.

As already stated it has a switch mounted underneath the dash that opens and closes it. Has a vacuum amplifier canister that prevents it from reacting to changes in the manifold vacuum due to changes in throttle position. Much like hideaway headlights on Chargers. Available 1970-72 on b-bodies.
Plymouth referred to it as an Air grabber hood on their cars. Dodge called it a Ram Charger hood.
