New guy here! Just acquired my 1st collectable on my way to a new hobby of collecting vintage oil cans. I know little about collecting, and I'm wondering if NE1 can provide info on the attached rack pictured. (I hope that I'm doing this correctly. It may take up to 30 minutes to ready the photo I'm told) TIA If that doesn't work, this should. It's in the last picture album. http://community.webshots.com/user/maxturbo [This message has been edited by Max (edited 07-12-2006).] [This message has been edited by Max (edited 07-12-2006).]

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Max:
Nice start to your collection!
That rack will look great full of cans - whether or not you fill it with 'Triton' cans.
Later . . .
Jim

Thanks guys. Looks like I picked a rather rare brand name to start collecting FWIW. Not a lot out there judging from on-line searches and e-bay. That's O.K. though, it'll be more interesting. Looks like Royal Triton oils were prevalent in the 50's, turning into UNOCAL and then Union 76 if I have the transition era / research (conducted thus far) correct.
I didn't REALLY pick the brand. It happened by chance. The oil rack was completely covered in brushed on black paint and I was going to afix a repro sign on it. I went to start prepping the surface for a nice paint job, and noticed slightly raised areas that turned out to be lettering. After two hours of wiping / scrubbing with acetone, I've got left what you see now. I'm tickled pink to say the least.

Max, welcome to the site, I think you will enjoy it here. On your oil rack stand nice find. Triton was the Union Oil Company of California's motor oil brand name. Just as Union 76 was their gas brand. The official name of the company was Union Oil Company of California and was incorporated in 1890, the name was shortened to UNOCAL in 1983 when a new parent corp was formed. Triton Motor Oil was introduced in 1934, the oil was heavily touted and advertised. Union thought the oil was so good they set up a 60,000 mile test run in Nov,'34. 60,000 miles in 60 days was the goal using a crew of 9 drivers.(By the way I'm no expert on Union Oil, I have two great books I am borrowing info from. They are entitled: Sign of the 76 and A Century of Spirit UNOCAL: 1890-1990. Both of these books published by UNOCAL)So to make a long(and possibly boring to those reading this) story short your oil rack is a nice collecting item. Not sure when Union made the Royal Triton brand. Hope this helps. Bob

Max I should have read farther. Royal Triton 10-30 was introduced in 1957. The Century of Spirit book has a large full page photo of a station attendant holding a Royal Triton can by the side of a motorist with a large Royal Triton banner above them.(Both books are coffee table books,so great big photos, very, very nice). By the way does anyone know when Union started using the Minuteman? I have a map from '47 and they are on it, just love those one-eyed guys. Wish they would use these guys in their advertising now. Bob

Bob, I have a Union Oil Bulletin (a company/dealer magazine put out by Union Oil) from March of 1941 that shows the new Minute Man Service signs being installed at select stations.
