Now that I received these cool Atlantic High-Arc lenses from Minuteman, I have a couple questions:

What does the Hi-Arc refer to?

I am guessing it was Atlantic's High Octane selection? If so, what may the "ARC" refer to?

What time period did Atlantic use this?

Thanks again everyone!!

I'm no expert - I'd also guess that Hi-Arc stands for the Atlantic Richfield Company's (the ARC in Hi-Arc) high octane blend of gasoline. I found a document that states it was for sale in 1947, but that's about it.
Look here, search "hi arc":

But I could be wrong - often the answer is not so obvious!

I was just looking around on the web to see if I could find any answers, and that's what I got to thinking.

Atlantic Refining Company or Atlantic Richfield Company.

I take it they took over the Richfield Company?

I guess this would make sense for the ARC, and now it's known as ARCO.

Ya, like a lot of the originals, they follow a pretty tortuous path from where they started out to where they are now!

I really don't think that the "ARC" in
HI-ARC has anything to do with the Atlantic Richfield Company. Especially if the product was sold by Atlantic starting in the late '40s and the merger didn't happen until '66. My oldest Atlantic map is from '51 and HI-ARC looks to be Atlantic's premium brand. It could be from Atlantic's true name; The Atlantic Refining Company or "ARC". Just a thought.

I always thought it was just a catch phrase. The "Hi-Arc" is what you get across your plugs in your car when you use this gas. It would be kinda like the "White Flash" logo. It just sounds like good marketing for the time. I don't think "Arc" is an acronym for anything in this logo.

That makes sense.

Hi-Arc in regards to performance and it also ties in with Atlantic Refining Company.

Would make sense also that this is what replaced the White Flash line.

Thanks for the education!! Now if someone asks me what it means I can sound smart.

"Arc" or "Flash", to me, would refer to the explosion(arc or flash) of the gas as it exploded in the combustion cylinder. When a welding rod "arcs" it flashes white or blue-white...... same with electrical current grounding itself. The "Flash" means it's Hi or Big or Powerful and/or a Clean explosion. Burns clean.....White Flash.......Blu-Flame...... Purple Flash...... Blue Flash...... so on and so forth. Clean combustion man !!!

WHITE FLASH was the regular grade and HI-ARC the premium grade. It was later replaced by ATLANTIC Premium and then IMPERIAL. All before the overall change from ATLANTIC to ARCO. HI-ARC was long gone before the Atlantic-Richfield merger.
