I had a similar Exide battery station at the spring Dixiegas. Each shelf held different batteries and the charger was used to charge up a customer or store battery after servicing the acid level.

If you plan to restore make sure you remove all acid contaminants using a neutralizer and serious attention to every surface and joint as acid will adhere to the surfaces and ruin any potential paint job.
