Well I got a globe yesterday that I was excited to get. Well that changed when I opened the box & got it unwraped. It was well packed & double boxed & wrapped in bubble wrap. They tryed to deliver it twice & no one was home. The box has one corner smashed in. Did it make them mad that no one was here the first two times & toss it in the truck or what. There where fragile stickers all over the box. Now I have a very expensive narrow glass body. Now to deal with the claims dept. I usually had good luck with Fed Ex untill now. What value should I put the body to deduct that from the claim? Thanks Brad

IMO it's not what they are worth today, it is what they will be worth the next time you get the opportunity to purchase the items (replacement cost). In other words I would inflate the value due to appreciation/inflation. Those lenses might be worth $750+ea in 20 years.

Has anyone ever tried to put them back together like stained glass - with lead between them? If it could be done might be something cool to do with broken glass like this.

I would not deduct nothing from the claim, you bought a globe and they broke it, put a claim in for the whole value, Rick

Travis, Won't work.

Lead cane takes 1/16" to 3/32" gap between the glass pieces. Lens would be so out of round, if you were able to do it.
Windshield repair or similar type glue is still the best repair.

Tell them what a similar globe body and lenses of "like kind and quality" now goes for. I doubt if they will give you much trouble as they probably will not research your estimate if it is fair. The guy who publishes Petroleum Collectibles Monthly would be a good source for globe prices as he collects them and appraises them for valuations. Dave Folck

I am sorry to see that globe broke. I was told by fedex and ups that they will not insure collectible glass of any kind. Let us know how your claim turns out!

There is a way to lead the pieces by using a copper ribbon and soldering the copper. My brother makes staind windows and uses this method.

But he is cutting each piece of glass to fit a pattern. Have him try a broken convex lens & keep it round.

Brad,

That really sucks. I'm very sorry to hear that this happened - especially on a very cool pair of lenses.

From the look of the left notch on the second lens, the lens was still mounted on the body in shipping. Is this conclusion correct?

It's definitely a good idea to have shippers remove lenses from glass and metal bodies and box them separately.

The lenses where still on the body & the packing was done by Kinco's Fed Ex. The seller did not pack them. I did pay for insurance on this too. I am going to keep the body as it is fine. What value should I put on the lenses? I would like to keep the second & just glue it. These lenses even had a small rubber washer on both sides of the lens. Well from now on I will tell the seller to remove the lenses. Still ticks me off though

Usually when a professional packer is involved insurance claims go much easier. I would value the body at the cost of a repro ($100). When the item was shipped a declared amount would have been listed for insurance purposes. You can say the lenses are worth anything you want, but the insurance claim will be limited to the amount of insurance that was purchased at the time of shipment. They may also want to see proof of value such as a bill of sale, invoice or eBay print out. Some shippers will let you keep damaged items others want everything back including any undamaged pieces. Good luck!

Did you buy this off of E-Bay, or was it sent by one of the auction houses? Just curious.

I have always rec'd stuff from Matthews' and Aumann's in perfect condition.
