Wayne 60, the Cadillac collectible of tall computer pumps. Brother oldgasser THE AMERICAN GARAGE guessed this featured pump a few days ago at the speed of light.
As many of you have figured out I am not much of an authority on gas pumps but I am an enthusiastic collector with a computer, an internet connection and enough catalyst to generate some good info and pictures that comes 100% from you oldgassers. Please participate heavily in this March POTM, you guys are the ones that make the POTM wheel turn.
I invite you all to send in your pictures, stories, info, etc. on all versions of the Wayne 60. Also please include these different versions along with the basic 60;

* narrow version (60-A)
* showcase models (55, 56, 60-S, 65-S)
* twin models (65 & 66)
* clockface model (866)
* any other versions I have overlooked

The Wayne 60 was introduced in 1935. Wayne, the most innovative gas pump company in the US hit a home run with this design. I can't remember where I read this but the story goes something like this;
"The Great Depression hit everyone hard, especially the many American gas pump manufacturers. Wayne quickly realized that if they didn't come up with a savior pump that they would fall by the wayside as so many of their competitors were. Wayne put together a diverse team of their engineers, production managers, employee wives and even a few art designers to come up with a pump that would be a benchmark for the American pump industry and keep the factory lights on at The Wayne Company. The model 60 result speaks for itself, the 57 Chevy of our great hobby." (the preceeding is not a quote from any reading material, it's my version from memory in a nut shell)
In the early 1900's there were scores and scores of US pumps manufacturers but today there are only three and Wayne is one of them. That says a lot about their strength and long term mentality!

It's safe to say that many computer pumps look somewhat similar at a glance but the Wayne 60 has a perfect design and it's appearance is in a class of it's own. The 60 is a combination of compound curves, flat lines, a pretty face, ornate trim and the unmistakable hips that remind me of a beautiful woman. (The 60-A which has no hips still reminds me of a beautiful woman too for that matter.)

The Wayne Company has, in my opinion, been the most innovative pump company in the US. Wayne developed a "perfect" computer that was so perfectly designed it is still used today. This milestone was licensed to the Veeder-Root company to produce. Granted the high tech electronic LED computers have replaced the Veeder-Root meters but there are still thousands of Veeder-Roots in service today.
Wayne is also credited for building the first stand alone visible pump in 1920 but I cannot take this statement to the bank. Even though I read this somewhere I see where Fleckenstein had a visible pump in 1919 versus the Wayne in 1920. This would be a good subject for oldgassers to expound upon because it's basically a contradiction of "who was first".

Please post any pictures you have, unrestored or restored and anything in between. Some pictures of a Wayne 60 in the process of being restored would really be neat! Feel free to e-mail me any pictures and info that you would like me to post for you. I have several pictures that I will submit off and on within the next week or so.

Well, it's late, I'm wore out and I do hope this POTM opener is okay. WARNING- I can say that right now I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but the 21st is now and the show must go on! A good night's sleep should remedy my weariness though!! I'm so physically tired that I may have trouble going to sleep tonight. IDEA: I might try counting Wayne 60's and give the sheep the night off. LOL
Happy hunting,

Neal Dunn gpf

I'm with you Neal,
I now own 3-Wayne-60's 1 in house & 2 0n the way that I need to restore, just trying to see what company & color combo plus Golbes & decals etc. before I start. I really think the Wayne 60 "clock-face" display is the coolest looking and makes great use of a small area to put all the stuff we collect as well.
Thanks, Elden

Neal knows!
i like your description, only i say its the 1932 Ford of the gas pumps (this ive always said) ITS THE KING! ---

WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING GOOD YOU STICK WITH IT!

i wanted ONE pump sometime in the late 80s & i bought a 6 foot electric, then 2 then 3 & so on, none i had really did anything for me so i never started restoring any. i didnt know any names: wayne gilbarco, bennett, etc... i learned as i bought them, (i also learned how to move pumps around from here to there! ITS AN ART most of you know how to do this im sure) then i spotted a wayne 60 not far from my house that i looked at dozens of times, i remember slowing down in my car & saying thats what i want right there!!! i still remember running up to that pump & looking at the ID tag & reading Wayne cut 60. i owned that pump 10 minutes later, (free) i took it home & restored it right away. i block sanded for months & it still sets right here next to me as i type! - i restored a few other pumps i thought were neat looking but i always kept an eye out for another 60. i now own several 60s. (right around the dozen mark)

ive been super lucky & only one is not from out of the wild & NEVER have i had A rust hole or needed to buy any body panel (except for doors) it seems i get the same pump over & over, the worst 60 i ever brought home had a hip pushed in & was a bear to straighten but its been restored since the early 90s. --- i have several un restored 60s & all except for 2 of them have had a panel or 2 taken off & stripped, cleaned, sealed & put back on. i have 2 60s all apart, & one is 1/2 painted, they wont be restored very soon because i have a car (or 2) all apart that comes first.

ive never switched a body panel from one 60 to another & the factory brass screws are a 100% must! --- im working on getting this "RUST BUCKET" of a 60 that i will make look good from 20 feet away & use it outside. LOL!

im excited to see everyones 60s posted!
Neal the Pump freak does an awesome job!!!!!!

Here is two diamonds in the rough that will hopefully be in the paint booth this spring. The one on the left (in primer) I picked up at Columbus gas two years ago. The Mobilgas special on the right was traded at Michigan Gas in Brighton last May. I'll post more pictures as the progress continues.
Lets see some more photos of these awesome pumps!!

Here's two pictures from our friend Jeff Houston. His reply follows;

Here is my first and only wayne 60. This pump I got on ebay, got the seller to end the auction early. It is farm fresh, been on the same farm since the seller can remember, 40+ years. It was a family farm, he remembered it as a kid.
One of our own, Don Beaver went out and picked it up for me in Iowa last year. It is still at his place in WA. I have never seen this pump in person, can't wait to get up there and see it!

THANKS Jeff!!

When I picked that Wayne 60 up in Nebraska for Jeff it was still hooked up standing in the guys front yard about 100 feet off from a busy road and he says no one had ever stopped and asked about it....
Just goes to show you they are still out there.

I know that most of you have seen these pictures before, but I bet there are a few new guys that haven't. The Utoco is a narrow body and the Orange and black one is a wide body. The Orange one is still patiently waiting for a Pep 88 globe.

Hi Doc, Look at the black stripe that runs from top to bottom on each side of the the orange pump see how this is wider than the red stripe on the other pump? This is the area that makes the difference between a wide body and a narrow body wayne 60. I hope this helps
Don

Doc, like gaspumpman said.
those pieces are the "MAIN FRAME" of a 60, (they are exposed)
although most of the sheetmetal interchanges, -- the tops, frame, & bases are different, thats why you will rarely ever see a fAnCy aluminum globe holder on a narrow body 60. (they wont fit) (heard they did make them. have never seen one) maybe we will see one posted on here? --------

Heres my wayne 60..its a narrow body (still waiting for a wide body for my collection). I always wanted a Wayne 60 and I had the opportunity to trade a very rare 16 1/2" Mobilgas Marine globe for it so I did. sorry about the picture ..my garage is full of stuff and its hard to get a full shot of it.

I put original porcelain signs on it and the globe is original 15".

NICE pic posting Doc! i like it. THANKS!!! thats only 3 pumps. i slopped paint on that old door real fast late one night & taped it to the showcase. LOL! ill get more 60 pictures to you soon. ---- the first pictured pump was restored in about 1990, it sets in the office & is in great need of repolishing! it was an (AWESOME MANY HOUR)resto but over time it gets abused, hit with the mop & people hang on it & kids kick it & hang on the hose etc... LOL! my sons grab a sign & say lets change BRANDS so i say go ahead, so they get out the drill & bore MORE holes in the door!!! theyve changed the BRAND on it quite a few times so the now back door has LOTS of extra holes in it. LOL! this month its a red crown. (we just have fun)

the showcase is pictured right where i found it (notice the bullet holes top left & right of the face in both pics LOL) the brown narrow 60 is where i first spotted it june 03. i finally owned that one Dec.03

Here are two of my five "diamonds in the rough". One day I can promise they'll be something to be proud of and I'll then share them with you. For the record they didn't come from my area (NC). Being I'm in the bible belt, there are basically no radical/liberal pumps of this sort here, mainly vanilla wafer G&B's, Tokheims and Bennetts in this neck of the woods. The only Wayne I have found within 50 miles of Wilmington is a model 100. These 60's came from assorted areas in the midwest.

THANKS for looking and a bigger THANKS for all the neat pictures you fine guys have been submitting!
More pictures to come from my end.
Sincerely,

Neal Dunn gpf

Here is one of my 60's that I purchased off EBAY that came from Colorado. The globe did not come with the pump. I am using the pump as a $900.00 globe holder because of the space limitations I have at my "estate".

THANKS for looking! Please keep those replies and pictures coming!!!!

Here's a picture of a Wayne 60 that I've been saving because one day I'm going to restore one of mine to look like this.
I REALLY like this scheme but I must admit that many of the previous posts on this month's POTM have given me some ideas for the other four 60's I've got.
Thanks for looking!

Here is a very rare Wayne cut#56 Showcase pump. I bought this pump at the Carlisle Penn. auto swap meet many years ago. The paint (gulf colors) was just brushed on. I sold the pump many years later to a collector in New Jersey, who restored the pump in Richfield. He did a great restoration.

Here is his website, for more great items. http://jerseygaspumps.tripod.com/pumps.html

Thanks Don for the posting of my Wayne 60 display pump.

Now that "Vintage-Loges" is pulling up so many "back From The Past" Logos & art work, I'm having a hard time choosing the brand & color scheme that I want on this pump. I thought about using Pogo's "Sunset globe" but that didn't work out, so now I'm leaning towards the "Sunset Marine" Deep Emerald Green trim color, or the "Signal (RED)Peerless" with Black as the trim color.

Being new to pump collecting I'm going ten different directions at one time, so just think of Hubba with out the tatto's, HA!

I don't know whether this is OK or not but I always download picture of pumps so that I can have an idea on how I might want to finish one myself. Below is a colletion of those pictures taken from this site and others.

Here's another Wayne 60 that I will one day restore. I purchased this one from a dealer and never got a straight answer regarding where it came from.

Thanks for looking!

Here is a 60 restored by Jeff Wilson. The picture does not do this pump justice. The detail was incredible.

This is a 60 that I purchased off EBAY from upstate New York. This pump looks as though it's been through a massive hailstorm, there are dings galore. It'll be a real challenge to restore.

THANKS for looking!

COME ON GUYS, this topic is only eleven days old and it's fizzling out. To be sure there are some more Wayne 60 pictures and/or info out there!!

Here's a little contest idea here;
whoever can post the most pictures of a Wayne 60 (any version) during restoration will recieve a mint NOS metal ESSO can from me. I'll even pay the freight. Obviously the pictures do not have to be of the same pump. Feel free to e-mail me the pictures and I will be glad to post them for you.
I'll ship this can on April the 21st when the next POTM starts.
Here's a picture of the prize;

Thanks for looking and helping!

I guess I should've been more in-depth on the rules;

1- The posts that count start NOW, 4/01/04 at 10:30 PM eastern standard time.

2- If there is a tie the first person which posted in this restoration picture contest is the winner.

Let me know if there are anymore grey areas. It's funny, when you start talking about someone fighting for a prize, all kinds of hairsplitting starts raining down.

Thanks for the help!

Neal

okay: i'm new to all this, about 3 years ago i bumped into this junk dealer from fresno at a turlock car show. it was january 01. he was trying to sell a busted up wayne 615, no glass, no handle, oh well, no sale, but i got his card. called him at least 10 times, on the 8th call he told me he had this old pump in his back yard. two more calls, he finally invited me over... a wayne 60! the holy grail. ivy (not larry) was growing through the base, and was up into the vacany where the computer was supposed to be. my third pump venture.how mch? i asked coyly. $500 i think. "where is the computer? i shot back. what is a computer? he asked. i knew i had him. I got it for $300, he helped me load it, and it sits in primer in my garage, waiting for a norwalk globe from dwaine and friends. true story. where are the rest of the 60s? gary

Did anybody get any Wayne 60 pictures this weekend at Chip's? Or anywhere else for that matter. Keep those pictures coming, old, new and in between.

Thanks!

Anyone out there know if Atlantic spec'd a globe on their Wayne 60's? I believe the Pump Restoration Book shows the pump w/o any globe, and none of the vintage photos I've seen show a globe in use - maybe someone out there knows for sure...thanks!

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Ok since this is back up to the top - can someone please post a picture of an original wayne 60 display case pump where the pipe goes through the center of the pump... I want to make my 2 60's into display case pumps but want to have them 100% correct with the center calc pipe.

How did this pipe work? Does it go through 100% straight up and down? Is it in the complete center of the pump? What does it look like up close? What does it look like on the top of the display case when looking up into the pump? How is the pipe attached and held in place? Anyone have close up pictures of this area?
