REMEMBER WHEN....A LOOK BACK SEPTEMBER 1995

FRONT COVER
Appears to be a photo taken at sunset by Richard Korczynski of someone's collection. Twi Mae West pumps stand sentry in front of an old store/gas station with the front end of an early automobile/truck. Nice collection!

PUBLISHER'S NOTE
There is really nothing of intersst in this month's issue.

MAILBOX
Four really nice colored photos are submited. "Seen at an outdoor flea market near Dallas" has a large left facing porcelain Mobil Pegasus way up on a pole. A nice 42" Caltex sign from Belgium and a very nice Red Hat Gasoline 15" globe are pictured. My favorite is a 1935 Dodge tanker owned by Beroth Oil Co. It is restored and in mint condition. Rounding out this section is a nicely restored American #24870 visible pump and a 1940 photo of two tall Tokheim 39's with Red Head globes.

PETRO GALLERY
An early Texaco station in Etowah, Tn. taken in 1930.

MIKE'S AUTO by Rand Peck
Mike Larivee of Amhurst, NJ restored and ownes a 1940 gas station. Although currently just an auto repair facility, the 1940 look holds true with era pumps and signage. It is a popular gathering place for car clubs and auto enthusiasts.

LITTLE PORCELAIN ENAMEL GAS STATION SIGNS by D.L. Cole
An interesting article on porcelain sign collecting with the focus on the smaller signs. Some of the signs pictured are Restroom signs, "Stop Motor" signs and some others. He then relates how he got started collecting signs, which is very interesting. After WW2, as a kid, he loved to scrounge around the town's dump sites. There was no EPA then and the "dumps" usually consisted of large gullys that one would back their truck up to and unload. One day someone unloaded some gas station signs and he hauled them home. Like they say "the rest is history". He supplies an old photo of his room and there are some really nice (and expensive by todays market) signs. Unfortunately, as the story progresses, the signs were all but destroyed in the coming years. This story is a nice reflection on a simpler time.

IOWA GAS by Steve Perrault
The 9th annual event is recapped with mostly observations and comaraderie of the attendees. A few items with pricing are mentioned. A 1947 Texaco calender for $10 and NOS Sinclair paper kites at $1.00 each (Jarvis, don't you wish you were there?) At the auction, some items are an embossed Phillips 66 oil bottle for $350, En-Ar-Co one gallon can at $175, nice Mobil/Gargoyle curbsign at $350 and a Valvoline Road Star 15" metal body globe for $1,000.
Among the few snapshots taken is a close up view of one of the neatest items I have seen. A 1930 "Moto-Register" This thing just oozes "art deco"! If anyone has one of these, please post a pic so others may see one.

MORROW'S FOZZIL ROCK FILLING STATION by Michael Karl Witzlel
Another excellent article on roadside memories by one of my favorite authors, ranking only slightly below Curt... Poor Man's Museum). This tells of George Morrow, a farmer that envisioned a dream during the Depression, of opening his own service station along Route 66 in Missouri. Due to the hard times, he and his sons haul
ed "worm rock" from the surrounding areas and constructed the station with built in living quarters for his family. Thus it became a 24 hour operation supplying fuel and eats to the growing number of travelers. It opened in 1932 and stayed in the Morrow family until 1942, after which it was sold and eventually closed.

IDEAS THAT DIDN'T FLY by Jack Sim
In 1924 a jobber in Suet, RI proposed attaching an old plow seat to a curbside gasoline pump. The pump attendent could then sit and pump the handle with his foot. All this was to cut operating costs, but....

NOW THAT YOU FOUND IT, WHAT IS IT? by Jack Sim
In 1922, Standard Oil of California in San Francisco installed three traffic lights at three busy corners. Of course, their filling stations were nearby. These very ornate traffic lights on a pedestal warned of a busy street crossing and also would indicate that gas was available nearby. Jack asked if any had been discovered and the question still is asked.

CAN TALK by Rick Pease
Rick discusses his newer desire to collect one pound grease cans. Then, as now, some are very graffic and usually less expensive then their quart brothers. A Golden Eagle, Anchor and Gilmore can are pictured.

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, LOUIS" by Dave Leach
Dave's map article looks at the many maps that were produced by oil companies for Worlds Fairs and other Exhibitions.

Has anyone else noticed how the very common stuff hasn't changed price much in ten years while the more desireable stuff has skyrocketed?
Dino lenses still sell for about the same amount. What would a Powerlube sign bring today? Considerably more than $300!!!!!

Good job Gary.
