BlackT,
Simply put, If you were there and the price was $150.00, would you have offered them $200.00, Hell No, you and EVERYBODY else would have paid the $150.00 and ran. They priced the item what they wanted to get out of it. To them it was worth $150.00.

Simply put, you have NO idea what kind of ethics I live by.... I'm not driven by the God almighty buck ! I'm the guy who writes ebay sellers day in and day out, telling them what they have and not to end their auctions early... That just has to EAT some people up.

There's others on here that have ethics too ! The ones that tell the old lady/man the pump is worth more than a few hundred dollars.

You can bet I would gotten a hold of the owners of the estate privately and worked out a reasonable price for both parties.

I sleep well at night..

BYE :P

My question was really whether or not the estate liquidator has the responsibility to "do {thier} homework & find out what the items are worth" on the items they sell FOR the estate. Isn't that part of what you hire them for?

If you hire them to sell your items for you, shouldn't you expect that they would price them to not only sell your items, but get you at least a fair price. $150 on this one isn't even close. I'm looking at this from the estate holder’s view. I'm not questioning the buyer’s integrity as that's up to them, but I'm questioning the estate liquidator’s responsibility.

Something tells me that you all would be spinning like a lathe in your grave if your wife hired these people to liquidate your collection.

Lurker.........i think you answered your own question here, an estate liquidator simply liquidates estates, an appraiser would appraise the estate....it would be very difficult for a liquidator to do reasearch on each & every item of the thousands of items they sell every month......
there was a case in Washington or somewhere out west where a person brought an item to an appraiser who appraised it low, then reccommended a good antique dealer who paid this appraisers appraisel....turns out the appraiser was good friend of the dealers who were in kahoots......the dealer bought the item, then resold at auction & made 10 fold for what it was appraised.....The appraiser in this case was held responsible & i don't know what happened afert that.....

its not buyer beware, "its, people be aware

Who said the estate was sold through a liquidator?

It could have been sold by,

the family itself through a newspaper ad

taken to or picked up by local auction..

or a few other ways..

Who said the estate was sold through a liquidator?

Nobody.

My question was "IF they hired an estate liquidator to sell their items.

I also stated "If they held the estate sale themselves then I guess they learned a costly lesson".

But, when I hear estate sale (which is how the story of these lens' was first worded) here is what I first think of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estate_sale

I was merely questioning the
responsibilities of estate liquidators in general, using this case as an example IF they used one.
