You low balled him? Probably cost him $20 or less to make the sign!

The appraiser was most likely an antique dealer. I find most of the people that call themselves "antique dealers" are dumber than the american pickers and ricks restorations combined. They mostly just want to appear authoratative in the hobby. Their true dumbness shines at auctions.

Interesting discussion.I agree with Dave that appraising can be tough, particularly the time factor. To me "current" means now,not last month. That can make it hard to come up with compareables on scarce pieces that don't come up very often. To me,itis more like "best guess" in many cases.
I also mostly agree with Thermoman regarding antique dealers.Around here we are somewhat lucky,IMO,to have one who is honest and a long time collector himself.Him I'll listen to;he helped me a lot when I was starting out.The others?I haven't bothered to ask in years.

Problem is that when your pump plates get sold again, several years from now, when you're not around---who will be there to identify them as reproductions? The same signs are available from US manufacturers and are marked as such! By buying from this counterfeiter, you are only helping the problem instead of counteracting it! Each sign purchased from him only adds to the problem at some future time! I don't care what he's selling, you only add to the problem by buying it, and I will never buy anything from him! I think this is important enough that I had to bring my quote from my previous post up again! You might make money by buying some of his signs but you're only adding to the problem. There are lots of ways to make a few bucks in this hobby without adding to the problem of abundant, unmarked reproductions! I sell stuff every day and I leave room for the next guy to make a buck or feel good about his purchase! Please don't ever buy from this counterfeiter--it only adds to a very large problem!

I'm thinking Maple is a shill name for someone associated with making or selling these signs.
And there is no "back and forth" about his signs being repops. They are fakes without question.
