I am considering starting a globe collection and have bought the Benjamin books. I knew the books werent up-to-date,so I have followed globe auctions on ebay and recently at Vics auction and its obvious that the prices in the books are way, way, way off. I saw a reference here to a monthly publication that apparently lists recent sales but cant remember the name of it. Does anyone subscribe to it? Is it useful? After seeing what these things are going for now Im not sure I can afford this, but maybe I can find a good buy sometime. Thanks, John

John, can't help you on the monthy publication you are seeking, but there are many, many globes out there in the $100-$150 range. If need be, you can collect single lens globes since you usually only see one side anyway. Attend the gas shows and you will have a shelf full of globes in no time. Good luck.

Thanks Gary, I will keep at it. I thought the single lens idea might be the way to go, so I bid on some of them at Vics auction and on ebay and they sold for more than a complete globe is listed for in the books! Even the damaged ones went for more than the books list. Unfort, there arent many meets around here, and I dont recall ever seeing a globe at a garage sale/flea market. Maybe Im in a bad area for finding them. Ill keep looking though. John

Hi John- there are not many bargains on ebay as for as globes go-{ or most anything else} also at auctions most go pretty high-some of the low end 100-200 globes can be found at some of the auctions- best are the shows- try Mason Dixon next month- if you have any extra items bring them along- most vendors are willing to trade etc- the books are only a guide- helps you determine which are 200 and which are 5000.00 globes-hope this helps a little-

Petroleum Collectibles is a monthly mag. Check The Oil is a bi-monthly mag. NEITHER one is a price guide, but they do list Most of the Gas Bashes/Events. Both have FREE ADDS.
Check out the MANY links on this site & the EVENTS page. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTION. WE all started out WET BEHIND THE EARS. db

...seems to me that Aaron Hop (I think it was him) had a series of articles in PCM or CTO! - basically it was a 'globes on a budget' thing...he set a price (either $150 or $200) per globe and wouldn't pay more than that...he ended up with quite a few in a year's time...granted, he did go to many swap meets, but it goes to show you what you can do with not too much cabbage...
...go to Mason-Dixon, there should be some 'entry-level' stuff there, there has been for the last 11 shows...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

It was Lonnie Hop [Aaron's dad] that did Globes On A Budget.
Buy what ya can afford so as NOT to xxx off the wife or budget.
