I just saw the auction and snorted my Diet Coke laughing so hard. I am a total newbie on petroliana but $16,000 for an unrestored pump from the 1960's????? I know there are are some very rare pumps from the late 50's into the 60's, but there are not that many, and one of these Gulf pumps is not that rare. I just......don't know where some of these people get their numbers for auctions on e-Bay. Do they really think that the buyers are stupid, or uninformed??? I am also a model train fan. Some of the prices that people put on models, especially many things Lionel or Tyco is beyond any reason. This text of this auction is very uninformed. ------------------ Jim

I love the question he obviously wrote to himself from another account...
"This pump is worth every penny of $4,000. I saw one last week sell for $12,000. I am sure you are getting all sorts of low ball offers and yockels telling you it is not worth $20. "
LOL Go smoke another one buddy.

I am selling one exactly like it in my friday-nite pump auction. If it brings more than $250, I'd feel like I was in tall cotton. What a rube!
It's just like a guy that called me today and told me he had a pump EXACTLY like the one on the cover of my brochure for my auction (Roman). He asked if I'd give $5,000 for one EXACTLY like it. I said I'd wire or overnite a check today and get it picked up by somebody by the the weekend, but why don't you fax or e-mail some pictures. Guess what....Wayne 615!

Unfortunately as great as the internet, ebay, etc have been for the hobby, its also created a subculture of people who think all their junk is worth its weight in gold because they saw that Roman sell for $12,000 or that Texaco Marine pump plate sell for $1000, so now of course their 1970s Erie and 1956 Fire Chief sign with a bullet hole in it must be worth the same! Mostly gone are the days of the "deal" but nowadays its getting hard to find stuff from non-collectors for fair market value, even full retail sometimes!

I have a question about 1965-ANTIQUE. I thought an item became antique when it reached 50 years old. Anybody know for sure? Oh and by the way this auction is classic! Mike

Look at the bid history page....two bids have been retracted over the past couple of days....one was 1600.00 one was 1000.00...
Looks like he had a friend make those bids early so he could retract them later once someone had bid.....what a jerk....He oughted to be reported to ebay.
