...anyone else think this looks hinky?

...sure looks fake to me...why bother to advertise products and services in 1" letters on the base of a curb sign, where they cannot be seen at a distance?

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

I'm pretty sure its real....its meant to hold a sign you see from a distance and maybe look down when you walk by...pretty well every base had a name on it...mm

Wasn't there some reproductions of these made in Mexico? I was at the Portland Swap meet a few years back and listened to a discussion amongst collectors. A vendor there had a couple of real ones he got from a Texaco dealer in the 60s and a couple of reproductions (his words) from Mexico. Other than the paint, I couldn't tell the difference.

I remember being told that the mexican repops had no threads in the center hole and the real ones did. I've never verified this info but someone on here might know.

I know a dealer that used to buy these a truckload at a time, they had them drilled and tapped and left them outside to rust up naturally, If you asked they would tell you they might be repo but if not they wouldnt say anything, just put another one out later...Frank

Fantasy item IMO...never seen one in old literature or photographs, or on an old curb sign...

...I also don't know of much gas and oil advertising intended for those who might be WALKING by...more likely intended for those DRIVING by...

...there's no way the designers at Texaco would have gone for such a tacky looking base in 1936...look at all of their other graphic design...rather sophisticated by comparison...

...MM: who cares?...I guess people who want original stuff care - but here we go again...
