...anyone else think this looks hinky?

...sure looks fake to me...why bother to advertise products and services in 1" letters on the base of a curb sign, where they cannot be seen at a distance?

I'm pretty sure its real....its meant to hold a sign you see from a distance and maybe look down when you walk by...pretty well every base had a name on it...mm

Wasn't there some reproductions of these made in Mexico? I was at the Portland Swap meet a few years back and listened to a discussion amongst collectors. A vendor there had a couple of real ones he got from a Texaco dealer in the 60s and a couple of reproductions (his words) from Mexico. Other than the paint, I couldn't tell the difference.

I remember being told that the mexican repops had no threads in the center hole and the real ones did. I've never verified this info but someone on here might know.

I know a dealer that used to buy these a truckload at a time, they had them drilled and tapped and left them outside to rust up naturally, If you asked they would tell you they might be repo but if not they wouldnt say anything, just put another one out later...Frank

Fantasy item IMO...never seen one in old literature or photographs, or on an old curb sign...

...I also don't know of much gas and oil advertising intended for those who might be WALKING by...more likely intended for those DRIVING by...

...there's no way the designers at Texaco would have gone for such a tacky looking base in 1936...look at all of their other graphic design...rather sophisticated by comparison...

...MM: who cares?...I guess people who want original stuff care - but here we go again...

...I've seen those Coke bases - they're basically 'recastings' (is that a word?) of the original bases, albeit a little on the crude side...but I think the Texaco bases are strictly FANTASY pieces...if someone can prove they're not, I'm all ears...

the best way to tell authenticity of this piece is anyone who has an original texaco base measure the circumference of the base and most repos are not the same measurement as original i have and have had many coca cola lollipop curbside signs with OG bases and this is not a coca cola base they always embossed coca cola in the cast unless it was ground off which is entirely possible. really another who knows item that is more than likely repo being
overbid to each is own

...isn't 'OG' short for Original Gangsta??

...but, seriously, folks: an ORIGINAL Texaco base like this one?...this one's too over-the-top to be real...

...does anyone have a photo of ANY marked Texaco base they know is real? Just for those of us who care about the real stuff, mmm?
