Okay, I'm pretty sure I know a couple ways to tell if a sign as been clear coated, but would like to hear from others.

Thanks

take a quarter & rub the edge along the suspected clear coat & if it scratches its most likely been clear coated

Roadrelics, you really run a quarter along signs that belong to other people? The owners allow this? Even with the possible damage to their property? Strange concept.

OH MY, Somebody please help......Bob is back harassing me again, .....this will be my last response to you EVER Bob, unless i have the great displeasure of meeting you in person. Are you going to Iowa??

My response... Did i say "run a quarter along somebody else's property"?? this method is for people who don't know any better, like you Bob, however wait until you own the sign...... the only concept that is strange is you, so go to the Doc & quit harassing me..........roadrelics

So your saying, you Buy the sign THEN TEST IT ?
Do the sellers refund your money for the scratched item ?

Someone asks how do you tell if something is clearcoated and you give the answer: "take a quarter and rub it...", I ask if you really do this? I do own a couple of original signs. I can't imagine someone coming and looking at them, then using a quarter on them. I'm asking a question based on what you wrote. I didn't see where you said purchase the item first. I am just trying to learn about signs. Might want to be a little more clear with your answers for us "beginners".

Take a deap breath guys...

I would be happy to let someone rub the edge of one of my signs with a quarter if I was selling it and there was a doubt that it was clear coated...

At the risk of getting involved in another cat fight, the original question didn't state the sign in question was someone else's property. Three points...

First of all, by examining a sign closely you can usually detect a clear coat finish. It doesn't have the same look and feel of porcelain, particularly an imperfect job.

Secondly, if a clear coated sign is purchased off the internet and was not described as such in the auction the buyer must test to validate the assumption. An honest seller should then offer a refund if requested.

Thirdly, a tiny scratch near the edge to test for clear coating should cause little damage and be nearly unnoticeable. Clearly (yeah, a pun), a porcelain sign will not scratch in that manner.

My 2 cents.

Powerlube, thank you. I just wanted to know if people allow it? It still is a strange concept to me, kind of like allowing someone to take a magnet along your car's paint job to check for "filler". A real possibility for damage. I took the question as wondering about the surface of a sign they were thinking of buying. Only Doug knows for sure if he was talking about a specific sign he owns, wants to own or just a general question.

Well you beat me to the punch Powerlube but I was going say to the same thing...in fact I just tried it on my own signs. I would tell any buyer if I knew something I had was restored or clear coated. My Powerlube and Powerine signs are both clear coated..by ME. Scott would have to agree with me that Powerine used some crappy porcelain sign makers!
Anyway the quarter test worked great and I too would have NO PROBLEM with someone doing it to one of my signs if they were serious about buying it and had questions about a possible clear coat. The clear coated signs both had scatches that could be seen and felt after rubing with the quarter. Not big sccratches. I didn't go crazy but you could tell instantly that there was a coating on them. Then I went around the garage and did the same thing to about 10 other porcelain signs and it had NO EFFECT to the surface. I used the freshest quarter I had in my pocket so it was sharp and fresh and it did nothing with moderate pressure to the uncleared porcelain signs but did leave a white looking scratch on the signs I had clear coated. You could also feel the scatch with you fingernail. It was a very light scratch and if you came here today you would have a hell of a time finding it but if I was buying this sign I would know something had been done to it. I feel like the guys on the Mythbusters show. It worked!

Edited for real bad spelling!
