Im looking at an old painted tin sign with a newer vinyl decal applied over top of it. The decal is weathered and peeling on the edges and brittle. Any ideas on gwetting it off without hurting the paint on the original sign? Thanx.........Les

Dick How about a regular old decal? I tried but didn't seem to be getting anywhere and things were getting pretty hot. Can a hair dryer scorch the paint? Thanks! Bob

I WOULD THINK A HEAT GUN WOULD SCORCH PAINT, BUT CERTAINLY NOT A HAIRDRYER...UNLESS YOU WERE TO KEEP THAT PUPPY ON HIGH AND IN ONE SPOT WAY TOO LONG! I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON THE FEATURES AND QUALITY A HAIRDRYER HAS TO OFFER. MY ADVICE IS DO IT SLOWLY....A LITTLE BIT AT A TIME. DECAL ADHESIVES CAN BE BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE SOMETIMES! KEEP US POSTED!

I've had very good luck with warming old vinyl decals with a hair dryer, too. Crusty old vinyl gets soft and pliable with some heat. If it hurts the paint, do NOT use it on your hair For regular old decals (water transfer) i've had good luck with soaking in hot soapy water for an hour. Not sure what that will do to your paint - it depends. Might want to leave out the soap if the paint is fragile. Wes

Thanx for your responses, I was thinking of that also but........I havent aquired the sign yet and the vinyl seems awfully brittle for this approach. I was hoping for a chemical maybe or some other idea??? Surely someone has tried something else with either good or disaterous results, im hoping for the good!!!! Thanx.........Les

When I was removing vinyl decals from my pump's front glass, it was very brittle. It flaked off when I picked at it, just a crumbly mess. Turned into like-brand-new consistency with some heat though. Amazing transformation.

Hi, if you don't want to use the hairdryer (which usually works well), you can also try a spray deodorant to get the decal off - works most of the times. I have had some good results using it on old vinyl decals - but your sign will smell afterwards! Keep us posted!

I am in the sign business and what we use is called an eraser. it fits on the end of a drill and it rubs the decals right off without hurting the paint. There are several makers but we use the ones by 3M. Most parts stores and body shop supply places have them. Allsho80

Les. Take it from a fellow Montanan...go with the hair dryer. Works great. And your sign is manageable and tangle free when you are done......
