I'm interested in any information anyone may have on Silent Chief Gasoline, or Viking Grease, which shares the same logo - a Viking with an axe and sword superimposed over the hexagonally-shaped word "Chief."
I have a 40" double-sided porcelain sign with this image on it. It came from the stock of a Canadian company that sold McColl-Frontenac products, and also had another obscure brand - "Starlight" gasoline - associated with it.
I know next to nothing about this brand. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sure GLAD your not looking for 1 of the 2 known globes. One sold at auction about 4-5 yrs. ago in the $10,000 + range.

Last September , Two of these globes sold at Auction in lake Simcoe Ont. One was a 16" Original Milk glass globe it sold for 2300.00 well under its estimated value of 6000.00, it was very washed out to say the least,and it sold with a McColl- Frontinac / Red Indian Shipping tag , the Auction said that this was the only one of these globes known to exist. But I was told other wise By a guy who said that there was another original one in a diferent collection as Dick has indicated . The other Silent Chief Globe that was sold at the Auction was a 13" repro made some time ago, it sold for 288.00 estimated value was $500 - $600 dollars, the same indivdual said that he new the guy that had them made, I believe he said that there were 50 lenses produced (25 sets total)I know this is not what you we're looking for but I was interested in the company as well when I seen them in the listing for the Stackhouse Auction ,I did some Phone calls and found out not much on the company but more on the globes themselves , and it backs up what Dick has said , and In closing I agree with DoDo your very lucky to have a sign, who knows how few of them exist. Hope this helps in some way

Thanks to all who have replied so far.

I saw the globes at the Stackhouse auction, and that was what renewed my interest.

That's also where I saw the "Viking Chief Grease" logo - on the shipping tag that went with the original globe.

I am aware of one more of these signs, and it came from the same area of Canada (Simcoe/Brantford, in Southern Ont., not Lake Simcoe). It sold to a collector several years ago, and I have no idea where it is now.

Memories fade, records disappear, and history is rewritten. I have some of the puzzle, and I am convinced that if more information is to be had, it will come from the membership of this excellent board.

Back to the hunt...

Another piece of this puzzle. Here is an old photo of a station. It shows on the sign above the pumps "HyVis Motor Oil" and a Pennsylvania sign of some sort, and on the facing sign "Starlight High Test Gasoline" and "Sun Oil Cos. Products."

On the pump, the globe facing the camera says "SUN STANDARD GASOLINE". Can't read the other one. Apparently the words were in yellow, and the background was deep blue.

This picture is labelled "Station at Nelles Corners, Ontario."

The picture is in rough shape and didn't scan too well, but it's easy to see details with a magnifying glass.

Sounds like SUNOCO to me...colors are right.
