I have the opportunity to purchase a large 8' x 4 1/2' oval pennzoil sign. Its made of plastic/fiberglass and is in very good shape, with little or no scratches/cracks. Thought it would look cool haning on my barn.
What's a good/fair price to pay for it? Thank you!

Geoff,
If you like it and want to hang it on your barn I say go for it. It's all about what you like, enjoy.

This is just my opinion. All these plastic/fiberglass should not get much money yet. These will be the new generation of collectables but not yet. Now should be the time to pick these up for nothing and when our Grandchildren are grown they are on Oldgas bragging about what crazy old Grandaddy had stored in the attic or buried in the backyard. Problem is when someone sees one sign command $100 or thousands of dollars they think any sign can do that. Once again this is just my opinion but you should not have to pay more than $10 for this sign right now. Yes in time this will be someone's prize possession but for now they should be cheap if not free. Mike

Thanks for the replies. I like the sign, but think 100 bucks is a little much on it. I'd probably go 50 on it, but unfortunately the guy won't budge on his price. Figure I'll give him a call back in a few weeks, and see if he still has it.
I need a nice big sign, but don't have the big bucks to afford those incredible originals a lot of you guys have.

I bought a Spur Plastic sign last year about this time on an auction sale. I paid $85 for it and was the firs of 15 signs sold, all plastic signs. A friend of mine pushed a Texaco sign to 200 and let it go, Conoco 175 and dont remember any of the other prices. (This was all the gas and oil stuff on the sale, had little bit of everything on this sale, typical estate sale) There were dealers there bidding, not just 1 or 2 other people. So I would guess if you want it get it, other wise you could loose it. The good porcelain signs are really hard to find. Good plastic ones are going get hot, because there light and very easy to move around. Plus you can put a light behind them and makes them look good at night, porcelain, you cant do that. Plastic signs arent that easy to come by, tried to get 2 conoco light up signs and sign company refused to sell them to me, same with a texaco and 3 BP stations here. I even talked to the station owners, and they said sign company wouldnt let them keep their own signs even though they had to buy them new. And I watched the sign company put a sledge hammer through front and back at one station.
That is my opinion, not that is worth anything.
Happy pump hunting,
Easy. G. Butler

I just picked up the large Pennzoil from a wrecking crew destroying an old quick-lube place for nothing and gave it to a friend for his garage. Wish you had been closer, Geoff...could have had a free one.
As far as the signage at the Texaco stations etc, when Shell was taking them over, I talked to many stations trying to pick up a few and was told that the sign company had to destroy the signs.

Thanks for the opinions. I realize the sign may not be worth anything now, but hopefully a couple years down the road, I could at least get my money back out of it if I needed to.
Looks like a real nice sign. I think I'm going to take a look at it tonight or tomorrow.
