I have an old hanging sign that I want to convert into a MobilGas sign. What I was thingking of doing was getting the MobilGas lettering and Pegasus diecut from vinyl. Then applying that to the metal and clearing over the vinyl. There will be some painted background as well. Here's the question...will the cleared of decals look like crap? Is there a better way to do what I want to do? Maybe get a pegasus and mobilgas template and paint it all? If I did that, where could I get a larger template, I do not have anything to trace.

Your idea of using vinyl will work - but I would not try and clear over it. Even the best 'outdoor' vinyl only has an approximate 10-year lifespan. Longer of course, if it's indoors. But sooner or later it will shrink enough to start cracking.
If you have paint skills, do your base color and then use your vinyl house to cut you 'paint mask' material. Use the masks for the additional colors - then clear as necessary.
If you local shop doesn't have the necessary mask material, contact me and I can set you up.
Later . . .
Jim
