Why fill with LEAD you ask.... I have seen only two of the type of Variator this plate goes in. I beleive it to be the first model that went into production in 1932 w/ the first Wayne #40.I am keeping it, so I want to restore it as close to new as possible. The numbers for this tenths increment plate are almost totaly rusted away. I leaded it up, filed it down and am taking it to have the numbers ingraved back into the plate.
I was able to use modified parts from newer computers to replace everything that was rust damaged w/ the exception of this plate. I was able to save the other two with glazing putty and a dental pick. They were not as rusted, but the one below was close....of course the one with the smallest numbers had to have the most rust....ARG!!!

I will post a finished pic when it comes back

The originals were stamped.I was lucky, they were stamped deep.
But if you think for one minute I am going to try to stamp them in...!!!!!I want it to look good !!!
The stamps to punch them in would cost a FORTUNE compared to having them ingraved.
The tenths plate is the last part I need to finish the variator.
I was all set to fill and leave it blank untill the lead & engraving idea came to mind

I was extremely lucky that other parts could be cut down at the machine shop, without having to MAKE the entire part. That would have got expensive

This computer is why I am trying to find production numbers for the first run of Wayne 40 pumps.
There may be only a handfull of these first computers left in existance....W-40's were 10 yrs old During WWII and were canidates for scrap.

I wonder if Wayne or Veeder Root have one of these grin

Hey Joe, I looked at the computers in my two Wayne 40s. One looks similar to yours and the other one had straight sides on the plates. Is mine an early eight inch computer?

If the Variator has the two 10/32 screw holes in the front, like the one in the pic it is a 1935 or + computer.
That plate LOOKS alike.... but will not interchange.
All three of these are the same plate w/ different #'s and holes.
It is the ONLY variator style that I have seen that has all three plates alike and has a MIDDLE plate. I think Veeder Root only made these one year. It is the only one I have seen that all three range arms are the same
I have found NO info at all about this model Variator.

This is a "before" pic I shot for the Variator band decal DB is making.
The tens plate has a marking & hole for 45 cents?????

Yep, I have been rebuilding quite a few clocks for Miles Little, I can't make any promises due to lack of parts, but I will do everything I can, to save a patient.

Here she is topless, lots of brass in this one. I am still polishing the range arms....Brass gears in them too.
1932 and 1933 variators had encased ball bearings in the range arms.....sssmmmooooooth. wink
This one is getting the NOS flat wheels, chrome blinders, and TWO of DB's Decals...upper and lower. I am going to have to get the bottom metal for the variator made. I had the stand-offs that hold the middle plate cut down from nice, non-pitted stand-offs from a later model computer. 2 of the gear shafts for the range arms were cut down to fit , all three came from a later model computer. The others were pitted bad.
Counting the sheet metal, machine work, ingraving, paint, chrome, NOS wheels, I am going to have more $ in this one in parts than what I charge to rebuild one. blush
I have NO idea how many hours I have spent on this baby....40+????
This is going to be the second computer that is going into my collection. The 1935 Tokheim #36 10 3/4" computer was my first.

Who else but me would collect computers???? smirk
