I did a Google search and there are a few websites there with some info. Looks like they were a part of Continental Oil and Refining at one time. Give google a try, I just typed in Patterson Sargent Paint, and a few sites came up.

BPS was advertised as "Best Paint Sold" Patterson Sargent made a full line of paints going back to at least early in the 1900s. They sold auto paints in the 1920s-30s

Hey Doc, Are any of your BPS cans for auto paint? I've got signs and brochures, but no BPS auto paint cans.

Here is a picture of some of the BPS paint that I found in an old Texaco bulk plant. As jim says these cans are about 65 years old and since it is lead based paint, it is still usable. The colors are all Texaco code numbers. #14X is Texas Co. Standard Red enamel. #17X is Texas Co. Standard Aluminum Pump Enamel. And #16U is Texas Co. Standard Utility Black Enamel. The old man who owned the bulk plant joked that BPS, stood for " Blisters Peels & Sags. Actually it still looks good if you are doing an outside pump and want to brush on a quick paint job, it takes a while to dry tho.

Here is a BPS brochure rack with a couple different auto paint chip brochures. They have a very collectible sign with a paint can as big as a man on the sign. He is posed as peeking into a slightly opened can with the wording, "Look into it" ------------------ Jim "Oldgas" PottsYour host and moderator

JIM I WOULD ASSUME THAT ANY CANS OF BPS THAT I HAVE LAYING AROUND ARE FROM WHEN MY GRANDFATHER AND MY DAD PAINTED THE BOATS IN DRYDOCK. THAT'S OVER 45 YEARS AGO. I WILL CHECK THOUGH...WOULD IT SAY AUTO PAINT ON THE CAN?
