I'm in the process of restoring an ECO model 98. As you can see, the ID tag was completely painted over with 3 coats of paint - white, grey, white. Some of the black came off with the paint remover but it's better than it was. Note that this is a meter built for Canada as it has Canadian cities on the bottom and the CSA (Canadian Safety Association) logo on upper left.

I used a water soluble paint remover. With 3 coats of paint on it, I removed one coat at a time. I spread a small amount with a Q-tip on a small area and waited about 10-15 seconds. Then I rubbed the area with a tooth pick to loosen the paint. Then I wiped the paint remover off so that it wouldn't go too deep. While the paint was soft from the paint remover, I rubbed the area with a toothpick again to see if any more paint would come off.

Slow and tedious, it took me most of the day to do the whole tag. As you can see, some of the black was removed by the paint remover so you have to be careful when you get down to the original layer of black paint.

Use any full strength paint remover. Get it all off. Spray with either flat black or gloss black, then sand it on a piece of glass with 400 grit. It will be NEW. but not a crappy decal like what are sold.

Chris. There was a post, a while back, explaining how to restore tags like that. What you do is, paint the tag black, be careful around the stamped numbers, then put it face down on some fine wet & dry sandpaper. By sanding it gently, you will remove the paint on the letter, as they stand out just a bit. I cant find the thread, because I STILL cant figure out the search function, on this new forum.
