When did Mobile Oil first come out with Mobile 1 Synthetic oil in CANS?

I have a case of this stuff that was made sometime in the early 70's. It was misformulated at the packaging plant and has been in the maintenance shop in storage for over 30 years.

Nobody can remember exactly when it was canned.

Best I can recall 1976 was the first year may be 1977.It was not sold in 1973 if this helps, it was after that. What tells you that the case was misformulated is it marked?
Sometimes the markings on the case can give you a clue as to manufacture date.
I have used MOBIL 1 from the 70's its great.Hate to here some is bad as I have been buying it up at shows $2.00 -$5.00 in metal & draining the oil out for use.Mobil has a web site its been posted here B-4.Rex

For Rex:

I sure hope that you don't mean that you're using '70's vintage motor oil in a recently-made vehicle. Requirements of engines (and - correspondingly - the proprietary additive packages of PCMO's) have changed tremendously in the last 30 years.

(As an aside, I might also suggest that you do some comparisons of specs on Mobil 1 and HAVOLINE Synthetic. Data on both is freely available on their respective web sites. Bear in mind that DESIRABLE characteristics of a motor oil include a high viscosity index (VI), low volitility, a high flash point, a low pour point, a low cold-crank viscosity (CCS), and high oxidation stability. And - after you compare their specs, compare their prices.)

Oh, and - no - I'm not an employee of ChevronTexaco Corporation.

Best regards.

Very astute observation,Jim.Most of the Mobil 1 I used to buy was for top off in my leased car .Now I own my 4x4 I change around 10,000 miles + with M-1.I have run M-1 25,000 + miles no problems.
As far as cost the 5 gallon jug is $18.99 on sale. The saveing on gas alone pays for the cost of M-1.Never checked the cost of another synthetic, been very happy with M-1.
I personally have sold thousands of gallons of MOBIL synthetic over the years to the industrial trade no problems ,Just cost so darn much,$900-$2500 a drum in 1989 depending on product.
Thanks for the advise and memories it renewed,Rex.

These sound like 5-12.00 cans, and are what most gas & oil collecters call newer cans. A lot of long time collectors prefer items much older. If no one has emailed you yet to buy them, chances are they are not that desireable. The misformulated part doesnt seem to matter much in this case. If they were really desireable I think you would of had them sold in the first 24 hrs.....dodogas
