I ran into a 1950's Deep Rock globe at a local antique shop. The owner of the shop said that the globe came out of Dick Knox's collection (the founder/President of Deep Rock). Evidently the guy lived in Davenport, Ia and died just 3 years ago.

It has a plastic body and is in mint shape. Guy had $700 on it, but said he'd come down to $550 if I buy it today.

Is this a fair price? What should it be worth? Any help is appreciated.

Ugh, one of those "buy it today for $X" guys... The number one sign of a shuyster... You know it's not going to be more expensive if you wait till tomorrow - the guy sounds like a used car salesman...

I don't like sales tactics like that either and I sell for a living.

Hoping someone can shed some light on the value of it. Wish I had a picture of it, but it's a simple globe--white body, white lenses, and says deep rock on it.

I'm no globe expert, but if it's the one with the blue square back ground,with deep over rock. I've seen them go for more around $300 to $350. And I think that would be high for me. Like I said I'm no globe expert.

Thanks for the info Brian. The globe is exactly as you described it. I thought $550 seemed a bit high too.

If it is the most common version with Deep over Rock divided by a blue band on a yellow background, the book value is $175 to $250. The version with a red arrow through the Deep Rock logo is valued at $250 to $350. There are other versions that are higher in value. These prices are pretty realistic( maybe slightly on the low side) but I would say a $550 asking price if it is the common version is definitely on the high side.

Well, I shared wfort's insights on values with the owner of the antique store. I had forgotten that I have an older copy of Scott Benjamin's globe value guide, so I also shared the values shown in that guide with him. The guide I have is probably much older and the value of the globe was a little lower than what you guys said (because the value guide I have is older), but I did tell him that I thought the globe should be in the range that wfort quoted.

Then he said he would let it go for $300. He then pulled his "shuyster" approach again and said if I bought it today it is $300.....if I buy it tomorrow it's $550. Hilarious!!!!!!

WOW... $700 down to $300. If that's the case than he will sell it friday for that.

$300 may be a little too high based on what the value guides say, but I do like the globe. I'd probably run down and buy it, but the guy's whole approach turned me off. Shame on me for not knowing what the globe should be worth in the first place, but for the guy to start at $700, go to $550 (if I buy it today), and then go down to $300 (again stipulating that I "must" buy it today), really put a bad taste in my mouth.

Also, now that you've responded to this email, I'm scared to even buy it for fear that the "Jarvis Jinx" will strike me down. Just kidding. Glad you finally resolved the stolen globe issue with that nutty farmer. I'd been following your posts on that situation and you are definitely the bigger man.

Buy it, who cares what kind of guy he is. Do you like it? The price right now? I have turned away from jerk sellers before and I was the only that got hurt in the long run. My 2 cents. Ted

I'm tempted to buy it despite the fact that the guy is a bone head. One last, and probably stupid, question..........

No one is repopping the Deep Rock globe we're talking about, right? I looked around and haven't seen anyone making repops, but thought it better to ask, considering what I've been through with this guy.

If not, it probably is an original as he states and I'll go back tomorrow and buy it--assuming that he's not a total jacka** and says it's now $550.

Think about it twice. This is an entry level globe and seen quite often for sale. I would not pay over $200 for this for my own collection. Unless you want Deep Rock items I would pass over $250 tops. Just my opinion. George

I collect Deep Rock & have this globe, it is the most common of Deep Rock globes, I got mine for $175.00 shipping included off E-Bay. Have patience go to some gas & oil swap meets watch e-bay you'll find 1 cheaper than 300

I followed up on a lead this week and will be meeting with a guy who owned a gas station that was in business when I was a little kid. My grandmother used to take me to this cool little gas station, now closed, and let me pump the gas. I managed to get in contact with the owner and he said I can give him a call on Saturday and he'd dig some old items from the station out of his attic. Can't wait to see what he has.

Hopefully, I'll have some items for BOTW when it's all said and done. Maybe it's a good thing I'm passing on the globe. Perhaps there's something better waiting for me on Saturday and I'll need the extra cash. I do remember that the guy had a cool air meter just outside the building. Up until about 10 years ago, you could still drive up to the station and they'd come out and pump the gas.
