Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to share with everyone the story of the first pump I have aquired. Since I live in a downtown apartment on the second floor, having a pump has not been a high priority. I've always said if I had only one or two nice pumps, that would be enough as that is about all I would have room for, and all that my back would allow carrying up the stairs!
Last week I mentioned to a farmer friend that I was eyeing a Tokheim 36 sitting at a farm near where I grew up. He replied "HECK, if you want a pump, I got one in the corner of the barn you can have if you want it." To tell you all the truth I really wasn't all that excited until he said, "The dial looks like a clock." THAT got my attention!
I went down to the farm over the weekend and here is what was sitting in the corner, where it had for over 20 years he said.

When I seen it I of course knew what it was. My farmer friend was looking at the plate and said, "It's a Wayne pump, model 866." I of course said I would be down sometime this week to pick it up, as I didn't drive the truck down there. I picked it up Wednesday, and dropped it off in a buddy's garage. At any rate, it needs some work. It is missing the doors, but other than that it's complete as it was built. By that I mean this. The pump was placed right up tight against the side of a barn. The guy said it was so close to it you couldn't put your hand behind it. As such, the pump was built one sided essentially. There was no clock face installed on the other side, just a blank placed behind the glass, and no sight glass installed. The pipe leading to that side was capped. I think I'm actually going to leave it this way as it is as it was ordered I assume.
I am not a pump man, and honestly don't know much about them, but this old gal is going to be my first restoration experience. I have already got most of the guts out of it, next step will be to disassemble the body to get sand blasted and prepped.
By the way, the only sad part of the story is I was a day (well 2 or 3 years) late and a dollar short on the other pump that dispensed the diesel on the farm. The Tokheim 36B went to the scrap yard ONLY a couple years back! He still had the doors though which I loaded onto the truck as well. It would have been ironic had I gotten BOTH pumps as the 36B is my other pump of choice that I wanted. Oh well, getting the Wayne 866 FREE was pretty good, don't you all think!??!!
Have a good one,
Darin

I have always said someone is throwing away something that a want. The trick is to find that person before it gets tossed out. Glad you got it. Too bad about the other pump.

That is so cool. You know Hillsdale is only a stones throw from Dansville. If you want to get that pump re done let me know. I have a wide body Wayne 60 all apart right now. Probably going to work on it thru the winter to get it ready for paint in the early spring. Would be no big deal to do another at the same time. Great Find!!!

Excellent find Darin!!Pretty darn nice pump for your first one! Be very careful tho! You've probably read it on here before that having ONE pump is OK because it won't reproduce but if you get another one, it seems that strange things happen and before you know it, they're all over the place!! LOL
By the way, I have a very, very, nice 36B for sale! Tempting huh!

Hey Tom, everyone knows I love Mobil, but I haven't seen many photos of Waynes done in Mobil. I would like it to be era correct, not a "Concours" restoration by any means, but true to the era. I've seen pics of 60's with a Mobil shield on the front and, well, it just doesn't look right to me I guess! Does anyone have a pic of one done correctly in Socony Vacuum's scheme of the era? If so, I'd love to see it. At this point, just looking at photos posted on the site and the net, I really like the Standard Red Crown scheme. I do have 2 crown globes and my 6ft. thermometer, so it wouldn't be too out of place in the sea of Pegasus' with those items around it. I'm sure it's going to be a slow process of picking a brand. Heck, I've got lots of prep to do in the meantime! Thanks for the well wishes from all who have posted. It really was exciting to get this pump in many ways, from the excellent "price", to the model that it is. Have a good day all.
